The following list was put together to assist coaches preparing for their upcoming flag football season. The task of coaching a flag football team is a challenging responsibility, but if prepared, the task is manageable and very rewarding.
Preparing for the upcoming Youth Flag Football season.
1) Assess your own coaching ability and identify your strengths and weakness. Use these items as a basis for assessing yourself: Know of flag football, level of motivation for coaching, organizational skills, communicating and time commitment. Once you’ve recognized where you have strength and where you’ll need help. You will be able to use this information when finding your assistant coaches (step 2) and assigning various tasks.
2) Establish your goals for the upcoming flag football season. It’s important to create your goals for the season. To many times youth coaches take on the task of coaching and they feel their only goal is to win. I’m not saying winning can’t be a goal, but it shouldn’t be your only goal. I always felt that I had an obligation to the players and parents to teach the game of flag football. I also feel obligated to make sure that each player I coached left the season a better player than when they arrived. Depending on the level of player and age, your goals will vary. Keep them simple and make sure they are attainable. Winning the league champions should not be the goal for the year. It would however be a great occomplishment, and possibility a result of achieving your goals through out the year.
3) Find at least 4 coaches to assist with upcoming season. Gain an understanding of their skills. Have they coaches before, scheduling commitment, prefer defense or offense? My best assistance coaches have come from various back grounds, but the one thing that was consistant was their time comittment and patenients for the players. Some of my best coaches had not played football before, but were great with working with kids. Keep a good balance of assistances and make sure they understand your goals for the year.
4) Greet the parents and players at first meeting. Although being coach doesn’t mean you have to become great friends with everybody, but it should include you getting to know the parents through out the year. The first meeting is the time to introduce yourself, discuss your goals, meet the team, and let the parents ask questions. To many times coaches will neglect to have a first meeting to meet and greet the team. This is a great opportunity to start the season and get everybody on the same page.
4) Establish a flag football practice plan that will utilize your time wisely. Showing up to practice without a plan is always a bad thing. The players will be more involved if you are organized and precise with your direction. You also need to utilze your time effectively. You will have limited time each week to practice, every minute will count. Your participation will also be high if your practices are organized and effective.
5) Establish how you will handle asigning player positions. How you rotate players during the year and in games is an important factor. This one thing drive coaches, players and parents crazy – especially if they do now what your plan is. Being specific on this will work in the beginning will eliminate anxiety and create a positive learning environement. Most players want to get the ball during the game. The nice thing about flag football is all players get the opportunity to get the ball. I coached 5-6 year olds last year in a 5 on 5 flag football league – 6 game season with a play off at the end – I had 10 kids. I created a rotatiion that each player would play every position during the year. I created a red and blue team – 5 on each team – each team made up of equal talent. Red would play defense the first have of the game and blue played offense, They switched for the second half. During the first 5 games each player rotated through every position on offense. The 6th game was used to warm up for the play-off game and I put together my best line up based on the past 5 games. I used this line up for the 6th game and playoffs. This was done for both the red and blue team. The key is each player was given the opportunity to play and learn various positions.
6) Prepare flag football plays in advance of your practice and games. Utlize a specific time in practice to work on executing perfect plays. One of the most important thing during the season will be to run flag football plays that are effective and your team can run without error. I’ve seen many coaches show up to games and make their plays up during the game. The team makes many errors and in return they have a bad experience. If you implement your plays in practice, make revisions and get your team on the same page as you, you will find that your team will be competetive regardless of their skill level. There are many sites that offer plays designed for 5 man, 6 man, 7 man, and 8 man youth flag football
7) Get your parents involved- invite a team mom to assist with organizing the schedule, team sporting gear, and weekly snack schedule. This is an important role and will assist with additional time consuming duties during the flag football season.
Lastly – Stay to the plan and HAVE FUN!

About Offensive Strengths
Without a solid running game, you cannot ever initiate a passing game. Historically, football teams that have had strong running games have won championships. Football teams that do not have a solid running game should work on their best offensive strategies and more importantly – having a run defense. Without a solid running offense or a powerful running defense, your team will most likely lose. Therefore if your team has strengths in these areas of play, then you may put focus on these aspects in addition. It should be noted, in youth leagues in which razzle-dazzle and no contact is allowed, this focus may find the opposite effect very true (because it is super difficult to be running through the line if you cannot throw off the defense off with power).
Utilizing offensive youth plays are virtually useless without having a solid offense. This is extremely important to recall when playing the game of adult football. Before you play winning football plays!

Kids have are versatile and flexible
The version of football has become such a popular game for kids all over the world. Although it is popular in England and South America as the name called soccer but in reality the youth football includes all sets of drills to play. That statement may come surprising to most kids who are under the impression that only the skilled and the talented can play football.Traditionally, it is a sport played by different ages, even practice routines are different in each sets played in the field.
Even practice sessions can be played for fun for kids
While professional football players devote hours and hours to practicing dribbling the ball with their feet running. In youth football, the coach might take time teaching the kids the proper game to play from one point at a time. Kids are so hard to teach at first because we know they want to have fun and each kid posses the trait of being playful. A coach might record the time when they see improvement to his youth football players. Alternatively, the kids might have a contest among themselves as who would become the strongest. As you can see kids adapt completion deep within themselves. Fierce completion also motivates them to do well in all kinds of football drills.
They even surf the web just to search new techniques or routines that can helpful to their practice. Some of the game techniques are helpful that can be found on the web is somehow be a good idea for kids who can’t spend much on trainings. But upon reading in the web, they can’t be idle in the game with the help of these online tutorials.
Serious games for serious kids
Football can be played seriously if the kids can also be serious.
Kids may participate on youth football clubs but not satisfied on what they know. Just like basketball, they strive to be good and to be athletic that is why they want to play it seriously. Coaches with a lot of experiences are what they seek and play against each other in seasonal games in order for them to become more competitive and serious to what they’re playing.
As you can see, kids can join clubs specifically to become professional players later on. Some kids really have no intention of becoming a professional player they just want to have fun and interact with the other young players with different backgrounds is something they want achieve at first.
Youth is a time of imagination and play and prepares youngsters to manage their lives more successfully as adults. Most adults see play time as something less productive, however your child needs to act out and practice the tasks and activities in their own unique way. Their budding sense of individuality gives them purpose and drive which they wouldn’t have if they were a carbon copy of other kids.
Kids need to establish an identity that is unique and meaningful in terms of their own lives yet it still needs to be relevant to society and their own peer group. You establish the context for their lives and it’s a unique context, whether you live in Dallas, New York, Miami or Detroit. The sports your kids play from bicycling, to basketball, baseball or football, creates the context for which they’ll have time and opportunity to use their imagination and achieve something meaningful, even if it is symbolic. Imagination and even spirit doesn’t evolve from nothing. It requires something to make it happen and make it meaningful. Without a football and teams playing the sport, there won’t be cheering fans and adoring parents in the bleachers. And with people, the context for community and family spirit is much deeper and complex. For kids, identification with sports players is simple and straightforward and allows them to identify with other inspiring people later in their lives.
Catching a football may not seem too important to most adults but for a boy, it is a test of their physical coordination and sense of achievement. Their need for confidence demands the development of skills, and for kids, physical coordination and overcoming fear are two big challenges they want to successfully achieve.
If you could view a child’s imagination when they catch a football or hit a baseball, you’d see more than hands receiving a ball or the ball flying through the air. There are an additional complex of images such as other kids present, fans cheering, scoreboards, and admiring parents glowing in the glory of their big play. So the emotional and mental aspects of your childs play activities is very important. Without it, these physical skills and the drive to accomplish and succeed may not be there. Competitiveness has to be kept under reign but if a child can’t identify with a reason to succeed, they will probably not do as well as other kids with fuelled imaginations.
We all frown on materialism or the idea that we need the merchandise from NFL football or NCAA football teams to provide inspiration to cheer during football games or any other sporting event for that matter. Perhaps because of how advertising is done today, people sense that it’s not about the kids, it’s about NFL profits and broadcasters need for more ad revenue. It kind of sours the feeling of camaraderie of a community or even boys cheering for a particular NFL or NCAA football team. You need to look beyond the motivations of corporations and recognize that donning your favourite player’s number is not overdoing it and actually makes the sport more enjoyable.
You as a parent can still shape the imagination of your child and use football merchandise to do it such as kids football uniform sets, hats, plastic helmets, shoulder pads, jerseys, pants, and even funny fan faces. Your child will only pick up on the idea that they’re doing something fun and that learning to catch and throw a football can be a fun activity to do with other kids their age. It’s not about idolizing players or increasing NFL football team product sales, it’s about giving meaning to a sporting activity which keeps them healthy and active. Without this sort of inspiration, there is little reason to catch or throw a football. That is why some people don’t watch or participate in sports such as football. There is no context to give it meaning. By introducing big league oversized football to your child, they will understand the culture of the game, its history, the players involved, the challenges of playing a team sport, and an awareness of the world outside of your city.
If dad cheers for a particular team such as the Dallas Cowboys or New England Patriots, then his son will be able to share in the spirit of it. With all these images in his head, he is going to be motivated to do well. It’s the same for any other activity a child takes part in. If their imagination is strong, they are going to learn faster and be more successful. It’s all in the context the parent creates.
So, rather than a wasteful outburst of physical energy, your child’s play time is actually preparing them for a more successful adjustment to life. Many parent’s first response to buying a child a baseball cap or a football jersey, is “my child doesn’t need it. He’ll do fine without.” Now you know those children that go without don’t do as well, and many end up wanting those football apparel items too much. Aside from peer pressure and the need to belong, they just want to feel special and attached to an inspiring idea.
The great thing about kids football apparel such as jerseys, pants, helmets, and pants are that they’re very inexpensive. Some youth football uniforms can cost less than and some may even double as pajamas and Halloween costumes. You can even buy shoulder pads for an extra small amount. The overall value then is very good with these youth football merchandise. And play time in the backyard or just walking to the mall takes on a whole new meaning for them when they’re wearing their football jersey or uniform.
It’s all just for play, but play and fantasy are a very important part of your child’s development. A little outside help in the form of jerseys, caps, helmets, can go a long way to helping them learn spirit, team identification, desire to achieve, desire to conform, and yet still build self-confidence and independence. And with their new Halloween costume, they’re going to have a lot of fun this Hallow’s eve.
Youth football players are typically less self-centred and more able to decipher information that is relevant to them and act upon it. Therefore, your football coaching can become more specific and progressive as these young players start to understand the concepts of time space, width and depth.
Youth football players are also more able to justify their actions – for example, the football coach might ask “why did you shoot then?”, and the youth football player could give a reasoned explanation as opposed to a more typical ‘dunno’ you would get from a younger player. Use the ability of the player to be constructive in their replies to help them reach and consider other options and learn from mistakes.
Player characteristics can include:
Learning – encourage players to analyse and solve problems by reviewing their own performances during the football drills and welcoming questions, answers and comments. By now, the players should have good knowledge of football techniques and be able to constructively contribute to the football training session. Continue to provide your expertise and knowledge but also allow an element of letting the game become the teacher.
Technical – As player reach the age of 11 upwards, they progress to 11-a-side football on which some will thrive in this new football formation whilst others may find it difficult to adapt. As a youth football coach you should be aware of this and encourage players to work more as a team rather than individuals. The content of your football training drills should reflect this and focus on realistic game situations. Youth football players should be aware of the roles and responsibilities of all playing positions on the pitch, especially their own.
Social – Youth football players (U11, U12, U13, U14) who are good at sport tend to be more socially accepted by their peers, no more so than in football and football training drills. Players who are good at football training will find themselves developing a greater social circle of friends as well as getting noticed by the coach! Football players for under 11, under 12, under 13 and under 14 football teams can be shaped by peer pressure and role models off the pitch so use this to your full advantage. Make them believe they will be the next Rooney or Gerrard! Install values and beliefs in to your youth football team and always encourage sportsmanship and fair play.
Physical development – as players start to mature physically, your football training sessions should start to take on a different emphasis by encouraging players to compete to win.

Millions of young football fans cherish the idea of wearing the NFL clothing representing their favorite National Football League team. What keeps many from that dream is the price. Some NFL merchandise is pricey, particularly good quality jerseys. Many are being sold for hundreds of dollars, and the higher the quality, or rarer the item, the higher the price. Of course, there are cheap knockoffs of authentic NFL merchandise, however most young football fans will tell you quickly that these simply aren’t what they want. They want clothing that looks good, and something close to a real NFL jersey. The NFL brand carries a lot of weight with them.
Of course some NFL jerseys sold in retail outlets or online aren’t the real thing. If you’ve seen a real NFL jersey hanging on a wall in a football pub, you know how huge they are. Two people can fit comfortably into them. The jerseys were design for large men wearing even larger shoulder pads. Only the quarterbacks and kickers have shoulder pads that are comparatively smaller than the well padded ones that linebackers wear.
For small children however, a real NFL jersey is too heavy with designs that are too detailed for the child to appreciate. Kids like it simple and comfortable and they won’t appreciate an authentic NFL jersey so there’s no point in wasting money on it. A kids jersey needs to be made of a softer material with stitching that won’t cause itching and chafing. You can buy authentic NFL kids clothing online at an NFL shop. Many people buying sports jerseys or receiving them as Christmas gifts discover that they’re perhaps made for pickup football at the local park and not as casual wear.
Many NFL jerseys are purchased as collector’s items. An authentic team jersey signed by a well known National Football League star can fetch a good price at auction. Most recently, throw back jerseys have become popular. These have the designs, colors and team logos from year’s long past. You may even have throwback jerseys signed by former popular players like John Riggins, Jim Marshall, Dwight Clarke, Terry Bradshaw, Jerry Rice, Walter Payton, Ken Stabler, Fran Tarkenton, and even coaches such as Mike Ditka.
NFL Merchandise is a very popular Christmas gift item. Sports fans appreciate these collectibles, particularly those that are unique. Sports Bars often lacking in decor ideas, are perfect locations for framed football jerseys. Nothing makes a better statement for your sports bar than the appearance of a signed NFL jersey up on the wall. You might want to have a jersey handy and ask a pro player to pay your bar a visit. Have them sign the Jersey. Then you’ve got a collectible that can impress your football fan patrons.
Baseball Caps for Football Fans
Another in-demand type of NFL merchandise is baseball caps with the various team NFL logos on them. It’s probably the least expensive way to adorn yourself with an NFL branded logo. Some merchandise manufacturers make NFL caps that have a rubber fan face built into it. Besides being a fun way to show you’re fan fanatic, it might help keep you warm on cold game days in these coming months.
For the rabid NFL or college football fan, an impressive Christmas gift is a headwig, or rubber fan face for wearing at parties or the game. And the price of this fanwear is great. For less than twenty dollars, you have some authentic NFL merchandise with the fan’s favorite colors and logo on it. Other items carried at an NFL shop are oversized inflatable footballs. These are a lot of fun for backyard play and take a lot of the seriousness out of the game. You can never have too much fun. For your car, you might want to block the Sun’s UV rays from your kids in the backseat. It doesn’t hurt to have a Steelers logo, or Jets logo, or Raider’s logo on it as well. Show your team pride.
The most popular teams for fan merchandise aren’t always what you’d expect. Fans in certain cities are very loyalty and spirited and they are more likely to get into the culture of football and adorn themselves with NFL branded clothing. Some of the more highly sought team merchandise is that of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Merchandise sales for the Steelers rose strongly after their recent win at the Superbowl.
Other teams that sell a lot of NFL merchandise are the Seattle Seahawks, Oakland Raiders, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers. To find an NFL teams merchandise check online via Google or Yahoo. You’ll find Chicago Bears Merchandise available at NFL.com or via the Bears official web site, and there are other NFL shops that offer official Chicago Bears merchandise. From collectibles to wearables, there are plenty of gift ideas for Christmas 2006. Stats show that fan interest in NFL football has continued to climb. Attendance at actual NFL games has risen and more games are shown on TV. That means fan-related items such as caps, fan faces, and headwigs are going to be present at all the games. Share the spirit this year with a visit to an NFL shop online.

Youth soccer players are characteristically not as much of egotistical and further able to translate information that is appropriate to them and take action upon it. For that reason, your soccer coaching can turn out to be more detailed and progressive as these young Players begin to appreciate the concepts of time space, width and intensity.
Youth soccer players are as well more capable to rationalize their behaviour – for instance, the soccer trainer might ask “why did you shoot then?”, and the youth soccer player can provide a articulate justification as contrasting to a more classic ‘dunno’ you would get from a younger Player.
