Welcome fantasy football IDP fanatics! We are reaching the midway point of the fantasy football season… For Week 8 there is a bit of variety in focusing on picking up players whether they are must-adds, bye week fill-ins or sleepers because you’re sleeping on them. Take a look and as always, feel free to contact us via twitter @fantasycouch if you have any additional questions.

Defensive Line Pick Ups – DL – DE – DT – NT

Dwan Edwards, Buffalo Bills, DT – The six-year pro out of Oregon State has reaped the statistical benefits of playing on a bad team with an even worse rush defense. Ranked last in the NFL, the Bills allow an average of 174.5 yards per game to opposing backfields, which if nothing else, allows tackle opportunities to Edwards and fellow inside lineman, Kyle Williams. Opposing coaches surely look at this as a weakness that can be exploited and create the game-plan accordingly. Edwards, who is owned in only 17.8 percent of ESPN leagues, has made the most of the opportunity compiling 39 total tackles (22 solo) and a sack through his team’s first six games without a victory. Buffalo will visit Kansas City this weekend to face a two-headed rushing attack in Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles making both Edwards and Williams a great option for Week 8.

Sleeper Linebacker – LB – MLB – ILB – OLB

Daryl Washington, Arizona Cardinals, LILB – Owned in only one percent of ESPN leagues, Washington is a rookie out of TCU who is starting to find his niche in the Cardinals’ defense. He excelled in a fast and talented defense in college which made him a second-round draft pick in April and that ability is starting to translate on Sundays. Out of his 42 total tackles, 34 are of the solo variety which is the ideal ratio in IDP leagues because typically scoring differentiates between solo tackles and assists. Washington lines up next to Paris Lenon as the other middle linebacker in the Cardinals’ 3-4 scheme and will continue to have an abundance of tackles opportunities and a decent amount of blitzes, with already one sack this season that came last week against Seattle. The 24-year-old has a solid career in front of him. Washington is a player to pay attention to the rest of this season and a potential fantasy stud in the coming years.

Defensive Back Pickups

Ronde Barber, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, CB – At age 35, Barber is a probable Hall of Famer as one of the most sure-tackling and ball-hawking corners to play in this era. He is having another solid season with 41 total tackles (33 solo), four passes defended and two interceptions in six games this year. Now in his 14th season, Barber is the definition of durable, playing in every contest the past 13 seasons totaling 214 games while returning seven interceptions for touchdowns in his career. He is a solid start every week because he can play the run as well as the pass and is owned in a little more than 20 percent of ESPN leagues.
Prediction: Barber will have at least one interception returned for a touchdown in the next five weeks

Sleeper Defensive Back – DB – CB – S – FS – SS

Michael Huff, Oakland Raiders, S – The former first-round pick (7th overall) in 2006 has developed nicely playing alongside Tyvon Branch in the Raiders’ secondary which has played well as a unit. Although his tackles aren’t consistent week-to-week, the 45 total tackles (38 solo) and two forced fumbles are very respectable. After having three interceptions last season, it would be expected that Huff would have at least one already but they may be coming soon to a stadium near you. He is owned in just over five percent of ESPN leagues and will be a solid bye-week fill in and potential starter further into the season.

The great difference why watching college football games is so much more enjoyable than watching pro football is not because it is exciting—heck, pro football can be exciting too—it’s because college football is much more unpredictable. College football’s third week of action is an excellent example.

The fortunes of four teams—Southern California, Brigham Young, Utah and Georgia Tech—changed dramatically after losing this week.

Third-ranked USC, which beat San Jose State 56-3 at home and Ohio State 18-15 away in its first two games, flew north to Seattle and lost 16-13 to a Washington Husky team that was 0-12 last season. The Trojans lost because Steve Sarkisian, Washington’s energetic new head coach, and Nick Holt, Washington’s excitable new defensive coordinator, played key roles for USC last season; Sarkisian was offensive coordinator for the Trojans and Holt was the defensive coordinator.

Washington started its season by playing hard and losing to 9th-ranked Louisiana State, 31-24, before knocking off Idaho 42-23 to record its first win in 16 games. The Huskies now believe they can win and, believe you me, USC now knows they can get embarrassed by a team that believes they can win.

Washington’s Huskies were rewarded for their effort by jumping into the AP Top 25 Poll at No. 24. USC dropped from 3rd to 12th in the same AP Poll. Washington’s Sagarin rating also jumped 39 places in 7 days—from 63 to 24.

Seventh-ranked Brigham Young started its season by upsetting Oklahoma 14-13, and then trashed Tulane, 54-3. Unfortunately, unranked Florida State, which managed to get beaten by Miami (FL) 38-34 in its opener at home, and then slip by lowly Jacksonville State 19-9 at home, traveled to BYU and stung the Cougars, 54-28. BYU dropped to 19th the AP Poll.

Eighteenth-ranked Utah, which was the only undefeated major college football team last year at 13-0, slipped by Utah State 35-17 and San Jose State 24-14 before traveling to unranked Oregon and getting upset, 31-24.

Fourteenth-ranked Georgia Tech opened its season by looking unimpressive with a win over lowly Jacksonville State 37-17, and barely getting past Clemson 30-27, but found the going much tougher against No. 20 Miami (FL), losing 33-17. The Yellow Jackets dropped right out of the AP Poll, and Miami rocketed up from 20th to 9th.

Unpredictable? You bet. The chances of USC, BYU, Utah or Georgia Tech playing in the National Championship Game this year are probably nil; all of them were undefeated last week.

Here are 11 ranked teams that won and are now 3-0 and moving on:

No. 1 Florida at home over SEC opponent Tennessee 23-13. No. 2 Texas at home over Texas Tech 34-24; Texas Tech was the only team to beat Texas last year. No. 4 Alabama at home over lowly, 124th-ranked North Texas, 53-7. No. 5 Penn State at home over lowly, 125th-ranked Temple, 31-6. No. 8 California on-the-road over Minnesota, 35-21. No. 9 LSU at home over in-state rival LA-Lafayette, 31-3. No. 10 Boise State on-the-road over Fresno State, 51-34.

No. 17 Cincinnati on-the-road over Oregon State, 28-18. No. 22 Kansas at home over Duke, 44-16. No. 24 North Carolina at home over in-state rival East Carolina, 31-17. No. 25 Michigan at home over in-state rival Eastern Michigan, 45-17.

Six other ranked teams won. No. 5 Mississippi (now 2-0 and tied with Penn State at No. 5) at home beat lowly, 167th-ranked, 1-AA Southeastern Louisiana, 52-6; and TCU (now 2-0) at home beat lowly, 137th-ranked, 1-AA Texas State San Marcos, 56-21. No. 11 Ohio State on-the-road over No. 105-ranked Toledo, 38-0.

No. 12 Oklahoma, after being upset by BYU 14-13 in its opener, is trying to win back votes with shutouts over #178th-ranked Idaho State 64-0, and now Tulsa, 45-0. No. 16 Oklahoma State (now 2-1) at home over winless, 155th-ranked Rice, 41-24. No. 23 Georgia (now 2-1) on-the-road over Arkansas in a really ugly win, 52-41.

The Georgia-Arkansas game was almost as bad as Notre Dame’s home victory over Michigan State, 33-30. All four of these teams are not that good, and you can tell that by the scores—none of them have a defense worth talking about at the moment. They could all get better in future weeks, but right now none of them are nearly as good as advertised.

Nine other unranked teams quietly went to 3-0 this week, any or all of them could keep winning and move into the AP Top 25 Poll soon. They include:

Southern Mississippi at home barely over Virginia, 37-34. Colorado State at home over Nevada, 35-20. Pittsburgh at home over Navy, 27-14. Iowa at home over Arizona, 27-17. Auburn at home over West Virginia, 41-30. UCLA at home over Kansas State, 23-9. Wisconsin at home over 102nd-ranked, 1-AA Wofford, 44-14. Missouri at home over 120th-ranked, 1-AA Furman, 52-12. South Florida at home over lowly, 162nd-ranked, 1-AA Charleston Southern, 59-0.

Seven teams should not have been on the same field with their opponent this week because absolutely none of them had any real chance of winning. They included North Texas, Temple, Eastern Michigan, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas State San Marcos, Rice, and Charleston Southern.

The biggest winner of the week? It’s the Washington Huskies, hands down. Their 16-13 victory over USA ranks as the greatest upset by Washington’s football program in school history. Washington just may become the biggest surprise of the season.

The much anticipated opening game of the Brian Kelly era at Notre Dame has finally arrived as the Fighting Irish will host the Purdue Boilermakers in week 1 odds. Kick-off is set for 3:30pm EST and online sportsbooks have opened with Notre Dame as an 11-point favorite in for the game that can be seen on NBC. Last year Notre Dame escaped with a 24-21 win at Purdue with a touchdown in the final seconds as Purdue head coach Danny Hope gave the Irish an extra time out that came back to burn him. Hope is in his 2nd year at Purdue after going 5-7 in college football betting spreads last year.

This could be a lean year looking at 2010 college football odds for the Boilermakers as they have just 5 starters back on offense and 6 on defense and a new starting QB with junior Robert Marve. All top ball carriers are gone but senior wideout Keith Smith returns after an 1,100 yard season in 2009. The defense allowed 29 PPG last year and may not be as good in 2010. Kelly arrives at South Bend after coaching Cincinnati to consecutive Big East titles and has plenty of skill position talent as he talks openly about his desire to “win now.” Sophomore Dayne Crist is the new QB and will benefit from Kelly’s reputation as a quick developer of signal callers.

The defense returns 9 starters but must shave the 26 PPG allowed from last year. Senior running back Armando Allen returns after leading the team with 697 yards but the Irish must replace receiver Golden Tate and his nearly 1,500 yards in 2009. Notre Dame has been a terrible overlay as a home favorite since 2006 with a mark of 6-15 against the sports betting spread. Kelly’s attitude has been infectious but the talk ends now and covering double digits in the opener remains a huge question mark.

Jamaal Charles:  22 carries for 177 yards along with 4 catches for 61 yards.  This game shows you how great Charles can be when he gets a good amount of carries.  Yes Thomas Jones got 17 carries but Charles was clearly the start here.  I have been a Charles owner all year as I love his potential but every week you never know what you are going to get which leads to a ton of frsutration.  Either way the man produces when he gets an opportunity.

Fred Jackson:  20 carries for 64 yards along with 3 catches for 11 yards.  Jackson clearly got the heavy load of carries and he is looking like a pickup if he is still sitting on your waiver wire. He still is in RB 3 territory but is good insurance for injury.

Jonathan Stewart:  14 carries for 30 yards along with 1 catch for 8 yards. What a joke this guy is now.  DeAngelo Williams missed the game with injury so the chance was there for Stewart to have a nice day with the full load of work but he fell flat on his face again.  At this point he should be cut in all leagues right now.

Steven Jackson:  23 carries for 59 yards along with 1 catch for 4 yards.  A blah game from Jackson who really hasnt had many blockbusters this season.  I am still a fan but injuries are hampering his production.

Knowshon Moreno: 11 carries for 40 yards along with 4 catches for 19 yards. Moreno is a good dual purpose guy who can contribute in both receiving and running but this is a passing team now so don’t look for much on the ground from the perpetually hurt Moreno. He still hasn’t made in roads in saving his wrecked season.

Frank Gore: 29 carries for 118 yards and 1 TD along with 1 catch for 7 yards. Gore is the fantasy football MVP at running back and is in the running for the league wide award. He has been consistently excellent all season and is putting up better numbers than both Chris Johnson and Adrian Peterson. I guess it wasn’t such a curse after all having to draft 5th this past season after the Big Four (Peterson, Johnson, Ray Rice, and Maurice Jones-Drew got picked).
Ryan Torain: 9 carries for 10 yards along with 3 catches for 19 yards and 1 TD. Terrible game for Torain but this is his first hiccup since getting the starting nod. Still the timing is bad as Clinton Portis is getting himself ready to return so lets hope there is no time share on the horizon.
Jahvid Best: 12 carries for 48 yards along with 5 catches for 31 yards. The interesting thing here is that Kevin Smith also got 12 carries and he figures to get the goal line work from here on out. Best has had his moments this season but he has not had the impact those who drafted him hoped for.
Brandon Jackson: 15 carries for 55 yards along with 2 catches for 17 yards. Another boring game from Jackson but most owners have dropped him or glued him to their bench anyway. Nothing happened here to change that view. He is nothing to look at.
LaDainian Tomlinson: 16 carries for 24 yards along with 5 catches for 37 yards. Tomlinson continues on his comeback season but that’s two duds two weeks in a row. Look for fatigue to be an issue for the 21 year old as we go on so if you are an owner, now is when you should be trying to deal the guy.

Ronnie Brown: 16 carries for 61 yards along with 1 catch for 7 yards. A lot of untapped potential here for Brown who has great ability. Right now he is nothing but a RB 3 and that’s a real letdown from a guy who should be much better.

Cedric Benson:  20 carries for 69 yards along with 3 catches for 12 yards.  Its been a very boring year for Benson owners as he has not had any sustained impact this season.  He has been just all right and thats not good enough for fantasy owners.  Clearly the offensive philosophy has changed here to a passing attack so Benson could be facing an uphill battle to get good numbers the rest of the season.

Maurice Jones-Drew:  27 carries for 135 yards along with 2 catches for 13 yards.  Thats what I’m talking about. Fantasy football owners or Jones-Drew have been waiting for this all year but whats amazing is that he didnt score once and QB David Garrad was involved in 5 touchdowns.  Oh well we’ll take it.  Hopefully he is feeling better and this is the start of a huge run.

Felix Jones:  8 carries for 22 yards along with 3 catches for 14 yards.  Once again Jones doesnt get the raw carries he was promised and we have reached the point that he is not worth waiting for anymore.  Let him go for good and revisit next season.

Chris Johnson:  15 carries for 59 yards and 1 TD along with 5 catches for 24 yards.  Johnson is not even close to the pace he set in his ridiculous 2009 but he is still getting the job done.  Stll he is not blowing out 100-yard games week in and week out like last season so on the surface he is a tad of a disappointment but thats nitpicking.

Ryan Matthews:  15 carries for 43 yards with 1 TD along with 3 catches for 11 yards.  Matthew and Mike Tolbert split the carries again and that looks to be the arrangement going forward.  Not good for his value but you shouldt have drafted him in the first round anyway.

Beanie Wells:  16 carries for 50 yards and 1 TD along with 1 catch for 14 yards.  Wells is the NFC’s Knowshon Moreno and thats not a good thing.  Yes he scored but he doesnt catch passes and is not getting enough carries yet to warrant starting in most leagues.

LeGarrette Blount:  22 carries for 120 yards with 2 TD’s and 1 fumble along with 2 catches for 9 yards.  Blount is easily going to be the biggest free agent pickup this week and rightly so.  I have always had an eye on the guy who was hidden coming into the league due to the fact he was no drafted as a result of bad behavior in college.  Based on ability alone, many front office types claim he could have been a first round pick.  I am sold.  Great game here as he ran the ball with good power and burst and even contributed in the passing game.  Get him now.

Adrian Peterson:  25 carries for 92 yards with 1 TD along with 5 catches for 50 yards.  Peterson is a gem and had a great game here.  Peterson is doing his part on a sinking team and has totally lived up to his draft status unlike Maurice Jones-Drew and Ray Rice to this point.

Ben-Jarvis Green-Ellis:  17 carries for 112 yards with 2 TD’s along with 1 catch for 11 yards.  Green-Ellis has shown ability in the past and he put it all together here.  He wont catch passes but if you need a runner than by all means go for it.

Darren McFadden:  21 carries for 111 yard along with 2 catches for 24 yards.  He has been one of the bigger stories in the fantasy football world this season but the injury threat is always there.  Be sure you have a good backup at all times and if you do than enjoy this tremendous season.

Marshawn Lynch:  9 carries for 7 yards.  Ugly.  Not much else needs to be said.  Waste of a week.

Whether you are currently or have attended a college or university, you are sure to feel some school pride. Perhaps your child or family member is calling a certain campus home right now. There are uncountable ways to show your school spirit, but undoubtedly the best and most favored is with collegiate apparel. From t-shirts and sweatshirts to entire outfits, you can support your favorite school wherever you go and in all seasons. Even if you are having trouble finding the right sizes at the college store, you are in luck. Several shops and websites offer big and tall apparel with your university’s colors, emblems, and mascots in place for all to see.

Where are the places to put on your collegiate shirts, caps, and colors? Naturally, you will want them for sporting events. It may be your school’s team, the place your kids play, or just your favorite spot in town to watch the game. If it is football you’re cheering for, get some sweatshirts ready for the cold. If you’re headed to basketball, other indoor events, or spring baseball, stock up on t-shirts and caps before the season hits. There is nothing like being in the stands, dressed in the colors of your team while surrounded by an army of screaming fans. You will be heard and seen with school spirit and pride.

When you head out around your city in your collegiate apparel, you may be surprised to find that there are plenty of fellow students and alumni everywhere you go. Be prepared to find common ground with others in businesses, social gatherings or just walking down the side walk. Who knows the friends you will make by representing your school when off campus.

One of the best places to flaunt your gear is on campus. You will always have an outfit option for class, dorm life or on-campus work with your school shirts and jackets. Remind others and yourself of the spirit you have for your college. Don’t let the prices or lack of selection and sizes at your campus store stop you from uniting with classmates. Check out stores in the area and online sites for a huge variety of styles, colors and sizes for big and tall. After your first couple of years as an undergrad, you will have a large array of choices for any day of the week and even for after you leave school and want to support your alma mater.

It will be a SEC showdown on Saturday at 3:30pm EST when the Georgia Bulldogs (5-5) travel to face the #2 Auburn Tigers (10-0) from Jordan-Stadium. Online sportsbooks have listed Auburn -6 betting favorites at home in week 11 college football odds vs Georgia while the over/under total is set at 63 for the game that can be seen on CBS television. While the Tigers will look to stay undefeated this season, the Bulldogs will simply be trying to go one game above .500 in regular season stats and break .500 in SEC conference play (3-4).

Georgia is heading into college football week 11 picks as underdogs on the road simply because they have done nothing this season to prove they are not just a mediocre team. Although the Bulldogs do have wins over Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Florida, Georgia has lost to South Carolina, Arkansas and Colorado to prove that this is indeed a rebuilding year. Last week, the Bulldogs were able to pull off a 55-7 win at home vs Idaho State and barely covered the 45.5-point spread as favorites in college football odds to go to 5-5 ATS for the season. “We have a chance to win a huge game,” LB Christian Robinson said this week. “That would make things a lot better. That would make people feel a lot better about this season.”

As for Auburn, they are the #2 ranked team in the country heading into college football week 11 picks but have a cloud of controversy hanging over their heads as questions regarding junior QB Cameron Newton (Heisman Trophy candidate) and his involvement with off-field tactics involving money to play for Mississippi State, Auburn and cheating on schoolwork. Regardless of the outcome, the Tigers have had an exemplary season defeating everyone in their path, including South Carolina, Arkansas and LSU. Auburn had no problem dismantling Chattanooga 62-24 last week at home but failed to cover the 43-point spread as favorites in college football odds to drop to 6-4 ATS for the season.

The Clemson Tigers can get back into the thick of the Atlantic Coast Conference Atlantic Division race with a win Saturday night at slumping Florida State. Kick-off is set for 8:05pm EST and online sportsbooks have opened with Florida State as a 6-point favorite in college football week 11 picks with an over/under of 44. The money line has opened with Florida State as a -240 favorite and Clemson as a +200 underdog for the game that can be seen on ABC television.

The resurgent and defending Atlantic Division champion Clemson Tigers have a record of 5-4 straight up and 3-6 against the spread in college football odds with 7 of their games going UNDER the total. Clemson has won 3 of their last 4 games and scored a big win over North Carolina State last week 14-13 although the failed to cover the college football odds as 3.5 point home favorites. The Tigers have been saved by their defense that ranks 12th in the nation for points allowed. The offense has struggled and ranks 70th for scoring and 90th overall. The Florida State Seminoles have lost 2 consecutive games at North Carolina State and then last week to North Carolina at home 37-35 as a field goal attempt at the gun failed to bail them out.

The Seminoles head into college football week 11 picks ranking only 42nd for total offense while the defense is a respectable 25th for points allowed. Quarterback Christian Ponder gets a lot of attention but has been good rather than great with a less than super 6.8 yards per attempt and a 16/7 TD/INT ratio. Chris Thompson has been lights out with 534 yards rushing and a 7.4 yards per carry average. Jermaine Thomas has averaged 5.9 yards per carry while Ty Jones is at 7.6 yards per attempt on the ground to make for a powerful attack. The host has paid out the college football odds for 11 of the last 12 in this series which has gone OVER 5 consecutive times at Florida State.

College Football Picks: Clemson Tigers +6
