You must have known that football season in southern is beginning through television, radio or the newspapers. Those of us who have followed southern football since before the NFL deemed it fitting to locate one of their teams farther south than the nation’s capitol, know better.

In order for football season to begin it would have to end, and of course, it doesn’t. Let me provide a few tidbits of information in case you were raised in a place where playing hockey is actually considered an alternative to football or where the end of the professional baseball season is more important than Thursday night Junior High School football.

Football in the north and football in the south are different things entirely. In the north you get tickets at the stadium ten minutes before kickoff. In the south you put your name on a waiting list ten months before the game, pony up a second mortgage on the trailer to the booster club, and read the obituaries looking for an opening.

There have been divorces, and I’m told murders, over who actually owns the family’s season tickets.

If a good old boy Alabama graduate marries a belle from Auburn or a lawyer’s son graduates from Ole Miss and marries a farmer’s daughter from Mississippi State we call those mixed marriages. No weapons are allowed at family get togethers.

Parking at football games also illustrates the differences. Up north the university opens campus for parking a couple of hours before game time. In the south RVs sporting school flags arrive on Wednesday and begin setting up the smokers.

Tailgating just means something else in the south. In the north tailgating food consists of sausage on the grill or avocado sandwiches and maybe a beer with lime all served on a portable picnic table. In the south a 30-foot custom pig-shaped smoker fires up at dawn. The cooking contest is the only activity that even begins to rival the football game. Winners will want their trophy buried with them and something like, “Best Hog Cooker” on their tombstones.

At northern universities still engaging in such archaic activities, the homecoming queen plays Field Hockey and is majoring in Women’s Studies while in the south your homecoming queen might well be a future Miss America. In the north both stadium and campus empty soon after the band finishes its halftime medley of classic show tunes. In the south when the game is over another rack of ribs goes on the smoker. Somebody makes a cold beverage run, every play of the just concluded contest is discussed, and planning begins for next week’s game.

Of course there is also a different way of dealing with classes after the ESPN Thursday night game. In the north students and professors may not attend the game due to classes on Friday. In the south professors cancel classes because even if a couple of students actually come to class they’ll be hung over.

Football season lasts the entire year, moving from games to recruiting to spring practice to NCAA investigations to preseason practice and back to games. In the south football season will never be over and that’s all right with me.

No team in college football gets people to share opinions like the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.  Even when the Irish are entrenched in a mediocre or bad season, they can spark huge debates on message boards and call in sport talk shows across the country.  Just like the New York Yankees in baseball, you either love Notre Dame or loath them.

2011 could be a huge step forward for the Irish as they return 19 starters under year two of the Brian Kelly era.  The team turned a corner last year in the last four games that included wins over arch rival USC, bitter rival Miami, and top 15 Utah.

The quarterback situation is still unsettled but should work itself out over the summer and the beginning of Fall practice.  Dayne Crist is the front runner to win the position back after he lost the role to Freshman Tommy Reis after injuring his knee.  Crist has the best command of the offense and the strongest arm, but has accuracy issues at times.  Reis has proven he can win games but won’t overwhelm anyone with his playmaking abilities.  The two wild cards are more mobile quarterbacks sophomore Andrew Hendrix and true freshman Everett Golson.  Hendrix played well in the Blue Gold spring scrimmage, and many feel Golson is the perfect fit for Kelly’s spread attack. Golson however is realistically a couple years away from being ready for live bullets.

Whoever wins the QB derby will have some weapons to distribute the ball to in the form of future NFL receiver Michael Floyd and up-and-comer Theo Riddick.  Tight end is stacked as always, and four starters return on the offensive line to round out what should be a productive offense in 2011.

On the defensive side of the ball Manti Teo returns at linebacker to lead the defense along with safety Harrison Smith.  Cornerback Gary Gray returns from a solid junior season and looks to fill the role of shut down corner.  The defensive line adds superstar in waiting Louis Nix in the middle along with two year starter Ethan Johnson.  The Irish also added the best defensive line class in the nation by picking up Aaron Lynch, Ishaq Williams, and Stephon Tuitt in the 2011 recruiting cycle.  All three could see significant playing time and should be household names in a few years.

The schedule sets up nicely for the Irish who are playing a record 5 night games in 2011.  The Irish kickoff the season against South Florida on September 3 and follow with games again Michigan, Michigan St, Pittsburg, Purdue, and Air Force.  Notre Dame welcomes in USC on October 22 for the first night game in 20 years at Notre Dame Stadium, before closing out with Navy, Wake Forrest, Maryland, Boston College and Stanford.

The great difference why watching college football games is so much more enjoyable than watching pro football is not because it is exciting—heck, pro football can be exciting too—it’s because college football is much more unpredictable. College football’s third week of action is an excellent example.

The fortunes of four teams—Southern California, Brigham Young, Utah and Georgia Tech—changed dramatically after losing this week.

Third-ranked USC, which beat San Jose State 56-3 at home and Ohio State 18-15 away in its first two games, flew north to Seattle and lost 16-13 to a Washington Husky team that was 0-12 last season. The Trojans lost because Steve Sarkisian, Washington’s energetic new head coach, and Nick Holt, Washington’s excitable new defensive coordinator, played key roles for USC last season; Sarkisian was offensive coordinator for the Trojans and Holt was the defensive coordinator.

Washington started its season by playing hard and losing to 9th-ranked Louisiana State, 31-24, before knocking off Idaho 42-23 to record its first win in 16 games. The Huskies now believe they can win and, believe you me, USC now knows they can get embarrassed by a team that believes they can win.

Washington’s Huskies were rewarded for their effort by jumping into the AP Top 25 Poll at No. 24. USC dropped from 3rd to 12th in the same AP Poll. Washington’s Sagarin rating also jumped 39 places in 7 days—from 63 to 24.

Seventh-ranked Brigham Young started its season by upsetting Oklahoma 14-13, and then trashed Tulane, 54-3. Unfortunately, unranked Florida State, which managed to get beaten by Miami (FL) 38-34 in its opener at home, and then slip by lowly Jacksonville State 19-9 at home, traveled to BYU and stung the Cougars, 54-28. BYU dropped to 19th the AP Poll.

Eighteenth-ranked Utah, which was the only undefeated major college football team last year at 13-0, slipped by Utah State 35-17 and San Jose State 24-14 before traveling to unranked Oregon and getting upset, 31-24.

Fourteenth-ranked Georgia Tech opened its season by looking unimpressive with a win over lowly Jacksonville State 37-17, and barely getting past Clemson 30-27, but found the going much tougher against No. 20 Miami (FL), losing 33-17. The Yellow Jackets dropped right out of the AP Poll, and Miami rocketed up from 20th to 9th.

Unpredictable? You bet. The chances of USC, BYU, Utah or Georgia Tech playing in the National Championship Game this year are probably nil; all of them were undefeated last week.

Here are 11 ranked teams that won and are now 3-0 and moving on:

No. 1 Florida at home over SEC opponent Tennessee 23-13. No. 2 Texas at home over Texas Tech 34-24; Texas Tech was the only team to beat Texas last year. No. 4 Alabama at home over lowly, 124th-ranked North Texas, 53-7. No. 5 Penn State at home over lowly, 125th-ranked Temple, 31-6. No. 8 California on-the-road over Minnesota, 35-21. No. 9 LSU at home over in-state rival LA-Lafayette, 31-3. No. 10 Boise State on-the-road over Fresno State, 51-34.

No. 17 Cincinnati on-the-road over Oregon State, 28-18. No. 22 Kansas at home over Duke, 44-16. No. 24 North Carolina at home over in-state rival East Carolina, 31-17. No. 25 Michigan at home over in-state rival Eastern Michigan, 45-17.

Six other ranked teams won. No. 5 Mississippi (now 2-0 and tied with Penn State at No. 5) at home beat lowly, 167th-ranked, 1-AA Southeastern Louisiana, 52-6; and TCU (now 2-0) at home beat lowly, 137th-ranked, 1-AA Texas State San Marcos, 56-21. No. 11 Ohio State on-the-road over No. 105-ranked Toledo, 38-0.

No. 12 Oklahoma, after being upset by BYU 14-13 in its opener, is trying to win back votes with shutouts over #178th-ranked Idaho State 64-0, and now Tulsa, 45-0. No. 16 Oklahoma State (now 2-1) at home over winless, 155th-ranked Rice, 41-24. No. 23 Georgia (now 2-1) on-the-road over Arkansas in a really ugly win, 52-41.

The Georgia-Arkansas game was almost as bad as Notre Dame’s home victory over Michigan State, 33-30. All four of these teams are not that good, and you can tell that by the scores—none of them have a defense worth talking about at the moment. They could all get better in future weeks, but right now none of them are nearly as good as advertised.

Nine other unranked teams quietly went to 3-0 this week, any or all of them could keep winning and move into the AP Top 25 Poll soon. They include:

Southern Mississippi at home barely over Virginia, 37-34. Colorado State at home over Nevada, 35-20. Pittsburgh at home over Navy, 27-14. Iowa at home over Arizona, 27-17. Auburn at home over West Virginia, 41-30. UCLA at home over Kansas State, 23-9. Wisconsin at home over 102nd-ranked, 1-AA Wofford, 44-14. Missouri at home over 120th-ranked, 1-AA Furman, 52-12. South Florida at home over lowly, 162nd-ranked, 1-AA Charleston Southern, 59-0.

Seven teams should not have been on the same field with their opponent this week because absolutely none of them had any real chance of winning. They included North Texas, Temple, Eastern Michigan, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas State San Marcos, Rice, and Charleston Southern.

The biggest winner of the week? It’s the Washington Huskies, hands down. Their 16-13 victory over USA ranks as the greatest upset by Washington’s football program in school history. Washington just may become the biggest surprise of the season.

The top two teams for the up and coming NCAA College Football season are the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Whether you enjoy watching college football, NCAA football or this will be an amazing year. The Crimson Tide will start the 2010 football season ranked #1 under head coach Nick Saban who is entering his 4th year as head coach of this very athletic team. The Buckeyes will start the 2010 football season ranked #2 under head coach Jim Tressell who is entering his 10th year as head coach of this very talented team.

The word on the street for the top conference for this season is the Big 10. The Big 10 has many outstanding schools that are in the Top 25 rankings this year and prove to be a threat for any of their opponents that are in the Big 10 as well as the other conferences that they play. As for the top players throughout the 2010 NCAA Football season one of the top prospects plays for Alabama and actually won the Heisman trophy last year, running back Mark Ingram. This previous winner of the Heisman was only a sophomore last season and as a Junior this year he has high hopes of repeating.

The next high hope for the Heisman is the Ohio State quarterback, Terrelle Pryor. Last season Terrelle seemed to have a good season starting out but the offense seemed to get tired and left him not looking too good in the voters eyes. The Miami Hurricanes have a prospect on the list of top players for the Heisman this season in Jacory Harris. If the Hurricanes could of had a better season in 2009 Jacory may of been a little closer to the top with the voters but without winning the ACC all his hopes were dashed. The game on September 11th in Columbus, Ohio when the Hurricanes meet the Buckeyes will set the season to how each player will flourish this season. So get set for another exciting season of college football. Watch it

Perhaps the premier match-up on the 2010 Virginia Tech football schedule will be the initial one. The Hokies will play Boise State at what is supposed to be considered a neutral field in Landover, Maryland just outside Washington DC.

Even so considering the proximity of FedEx to Virginia Tech and the big VT alumni base, and the actual length from Boise, it’s nearer to a home game for the Hokies (though the actual Boise State Bronco group of followers does indeed often journey nicely). Virginia Tech Boise State tickets will be in high demand and among the toughest Virginia Tech tickets to have in 2010.

This game may feature two most likely top 5 ranked college football teams in 2010 and shall be of great interest not only to their fan bases but to college football lovers generally. By putting the game on in primetime on September 6 (Labor Day), ESPN has switched this right into a designed for Tv event. Additionally, it has given both programs plenty of off-season anticipation and Frank Beamer, the head coach of Virginia Tech has often said that this type of game adds great focus to off-season planning.

]]>

This game has wider ramifications to college football, beyond just the destiny of Virginia Tech and Boise State football. Boise State is really a loaded squad and despite being in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) – and headed to the Mountain West Conference next year – they are highly rated and considered a national title contender. This really is due to the fact that the squad had been undefeated in ’09, including wins over Oregon in the PAC10 and the previously unbeaten TCU squad.

Boise State also returns 21 of 22 starters from this past year, something almost impossible to do, and thus many anticipate them to have a good chance to run the table again in 2010. If they defeat Virginia Tech in September, and go on to go undefeated, there is a powerful possibility they could be playing for that BCS National championship.

BCS situations tend to be impossible to calculate, and an undefeated mid-major team has been omitted often, however Boise has a real advantage in 2010. That would be it’s starting top 5 ranking in the polls at the start of the year, as well as the trustworthiness it gained in 2009. Once again, its impossible to predict all the scenarios, and definitely some undefeated teams in major conferences might lock out Boise from the BCS title game. However an undefeated Bronco team has better chance than ever of playing for that title in 2010.

With regard to VT football, this game is a sub-plot on their own season too. The Hokies generally come with an annual objective of winning the ACC, and this game doesn’t have bearing on that. However this is thought to be a really promising year for the Hokies, who’ve played in however never won a college football championship. This is one of the pendulum swinging years where Virginia Tech could make a run at a BCS championship, and it will not occur unless of course they defeat Boise State in the opener.

This is going to be a great match-up and will have the full consideration of the college football world. A lot about both clubs may already be determined after the VT vs Boise game on Sept 6 is over!

Through six weeks of the NFL fantasy football season, lets take a look at how the running backs around the league currently stack up with a heavy emphasis on this year’s production.

1.  Chris Johnson
2.  Adrian Peterson
3.  Arian Foster
4.  Frank Gore
5.  LeSean McCoy
6.  Ray Rice
7.  Maurice Jones-Drew
8.  Rashard Mendenhall
9.  Michael Turner
10. Steven Jackson
11. Ahmad Bradshaw
12. LaDainian Tomlinson
13. Joseph Addai
14. Matt Forte
15. Darren McFadden
16. Jamaal Charles
17. Peyton Hillis
18. Cedric Benson
19. Jahvid Best
20. DeAngelo Williams
21. Ryan Matthews
22. Ronnie Brown
23. Felix Jones
24. Marshawn Lynch
25. Thomas Jones

-The biggest movers were Arian Foster and LeSean McCoy who have arguably been just as good if not better than the two headed monster of Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson.  When you factor in PPR leagues, both of these guys are right at the top.  McCoy was looked like as a baby Brian Westbrook so the bigger surprise by far is Foster who didn’t have any type of track record to speak of.
-Maurice Jones-Drew has been a big disappointment this season.  Some in the fantasy football community are even using the bust label which I think is way too harsh.  Still the nagging injuries and poor offense in Jacksonville in general have hurt his production.
-After a slow start Ray Rice has really taken off the last two weeks.  He is no getting goal line looks which was the only thing holding him back.
-I like the progress Rashard Mendenhall has made.  In a season where fellow draft class backs like Beanie Wells and Knowshon Moreno have let down their fantasy football owners, Mendenhall has brought the goods in almost every contest.
-Its amazing what LaDainian Tomlinson is doing.  If you put a Chargers uniform on him, you would swear it was 2006 all over again.  He still has life in those legs but don’t get greedy next season.
-Ahmad Bradshaw is also having somewhat of a breakout season and he has a Maurice Jones-Drew type game.  Unfortunately for his fantasy football owners, Brandon Jacobs is still around to swipe his touchdowns.
-Keep an eye on Felix Jones who has the chance he has been waiting for as the de facto starter for the Cowboys.  Jones has the total package and can be a huge asset in the second half of the year.
-Myself and many others in the fantasy football community would have bet any amount of money that Jamaal Charles would have been a top ten runner all year.  Unfortunately the presence of Thomas Jones is ruining his season.
-Jahvid Best has tremendous speed and is a big play waiting to happen but he is not running the ball well.  Right now he has much more value in PPR leagues as he catches a lot of passes.
-DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart have fallen off the planet in fantasy football RB rankings.  The offense is a joke in Carolina and neither guy has picked up the slack for the QB play.
-Darren McFadden would have been a top 7 guy if he didn’t get hurt.  He was really putting it all together before the injury but he now has let Michael Bush back into the picture.
-Peyton Hillis has cracked the list with his solid all around play as he has rewarded those fantasy football owners who took a shot on him after his breakout game.  Keep putting him out there despite how pathetic the team is.

There you have it.  What do you think of the list?  Who is too high?  Too low?  Lets hear it.

http://www.bukisa.com/articles/379131_nfl-fantasy-football-in-season-running-back-rankings

Major League Soccer (MLS) players and owners recently agreed to a bargaining agreement that will allow the soccer season to begin on time. The player’s union had voted in a landslide to go on strike. In fact, the vote was 383 to 2 according to sources. So, it would have happened if the owners didn’t sign on to the agreement. Unlike other major sports league in the United States, soccer has never had a strike season, an attribute to both players and owners. It definitely does not need one either!

MLS cannot afford to have a lockout season. For one, soccer has flourished in the United States ever since its inception in 1996. Before that time, pro soccer was none existent in North America. So, there is no need for the sport to revert back to its growing years when it was struggling to get people in stadium seats. In fact, this is the second go around for soccer in the US.

The first time pro soccer was attempted in North America it failed, miserably. As a result, there were no other attempts until recently when the US national team began to do well on the world stage in World Cup qualifying matches and the World Cup. We should therefore give credit to the Bruce Arena’s and other coaches before him who helped paved the way for the successful rebirth of soccer in the United States.

Major League Soccer is so popular in the US now that top pro players all over the world are coming to the States to play soccer. David Beckham is one such player, who is playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy, a US-based pro soccer team. He is practically a legend in British soccer, appearing in World Cups after World Cups for the country.

Soccer needs the United States. The more popular soccer is in the US the more revenue will be generated. Revenue can be obtained from soccer merchandising, advertising, marketing, TV network deals, and so on. The potential market for soccer in North America is therefore enormous. It is like a gold mine waiting to be discovered. Having soccer players from other countries play in the United States, help build the credibility and perception of quality soccer in the US.

Top teams from powerful soccer countries, such as Brazil and England play meaningful games against MLS teams. The most recent was Santos, a top Brazil pro soccer team that played the New York Red Bulls, New York’s own pro soccer team, based in New Jersey. The game was the inaugural first game ever played in the new Red Bull Multimillion dollar stadium. To say the least, the game was more than anyone could have ever expected; it was very exciting and competitive with back and forth action that kept diehard soccer fans on the edge of their seats. To the delight of the American soccer fans, the Red Bulls won the game 3-1 over Santos.

The real winner was American Major League soccer. Occurrences such as the one mentioned above brings credibility to US soccer. The fact that the Red Bulls were competitive and even beat the Brazilians, showed that American soccer has truly come of age.

Therefore, whatever soccer’s governing body, owners, players, coaches, and referees can do to preserve the growth of soccer in North America, they should all do it without hesitation. When there is a disagreement between players and owners in regards to revenue sharing, such disagreements should not be allowed to result in the stoppage of play because if this is allowed to happened, pro soccer in the United States will suffer severely.

This year’s season has already started and, as usual, fans are extremely excited about seeing their favorite teams and players. It seems that the enthusiasm for this sport grows with every single game played season upon season.  If you are true football lover I am sure you anticipate buying at least a few items of football merchandise during the year – items that have that have been made especially for you and other supporters. Nowadays football merchandise is not limited to autographed footballs and t-shirts; there are so many options available for all age groups.  They can be a great way to show your devotion and support for a team or player and they can make great football presents for your close friends and or family members.
You may be wondering, what the options are for football presents other than shirts and footballs. Undoubtedly there are so many football merchandise options available for all age groups – so let’s have a look at some of them.
Shirts: If you want to buy shirts as football presents then you may be interested to learn that you have selected the most popular football merchandise category.  There are three major sub-categories when it comes to shirts of days gone by: classic football shirts, vintage football shirts, and retro football shirts. You will see many different definitions for each of these categories but in essence they represent teams from the 1950′s, 1960,s and 1970′s that have been successful in winning their league or winning cup finals such as the FA cup or world cup. If ever you get the chance to have one of these shirts signed by the players obviously it becomes even more precious. Football shirts are often worn to games or kept as memorabilia – they have become a fashion statement for many. Nowadays these shirts are available as football presents in some of the best online stores where you can buy them at affordable prices. So it is not a bad idea to bear in mind that these types of shirts make excellent gifts or presents.
Games, Toys and Clothes: In the past buying football memorabilia was often limited to shirts and footballs. But the scenario has changed over the course of the last 20 years or so. Now there are a whole host of options for all the family, besides scarves and hats and other things to wear there are many of options available if you want to buy something related to football. There are plenty of new additions to the football merchandise list.  For all ages there are football related games such as monopoly, playing cards and darts and for the toddler how about a scooter and for the older kids Nintendo kits.  All with the logo of the football team they support on them.
Girl’s Accessories: You may be surprised to hear this but there are many football presents available that are suitable for girls of all ages, some of the very latest additions include very attractive items of jewelry, such as rings, bracelets, and necklaces. So if you are looking for a football present for a girl why not look at the jewelry section; there are silver and stainless steel items all very reasonably priced.  Besides jewelry, of course there are many other items that make excellent football presents, these include hats, scarves, posters, pillows and duvet covers to name a few.
Other football merchandise: Apart from the items discussed above there are many other items that make wonderful gifts like clocks, watches, computer products and car accessories as well. In addition there are now Christmas related presents in stock such as decorations, calendars or annuals and plenty of items for birthdays such as birthday cards and confectionary. You can even buy products for you pets such as pet feed mats, collars, leads and shirts.
Where to buy these products? There are many local retailers which have most of these items in their stores but if you wish to shop from the comfort of your own home why not search for these items online. In a few mouse clicks you will faced with many football present options from which you can choose.

For a football player who wants to improve his performance in the next season, the best important time is the summer to make changes in their body type. How much the time that a player devotes to football will impact how he will play in the fall. However, except for practice, there are other important things a football player can do.

Changing nutritional habits is one of the best things that a football player can do. Each one of us knows that diet is the fuel of our body, we cannot do anything with diet just like a car cannot run without fuel. Diet is also something that someone cannot change overnight.

A football player should think of their body like a mini factory. If you start with garbage as the raw product, you will get garbage in a different form as the final products. On the contrary, if a factory is using sub-par material they will produce sub-par products. Just as if a football player eats a poor diet then they will have poorer performance when they call upon their bodies to perform.

Having an increase in protein during the summer is very helpful for a football player’s to practice. A simple formula for how much protein a football player in training intake a day is: half of your bodyweight in grams of protein. Meaning if you weigh 240 pounds , then you should be taking in at lease 120 grams of protein a day.

Getting the best protein supplement for football players is essential. A football player should use whey protein which is easier for most people to digest and metabolize.

The summer is the one of the best times for football players to build their bodies. If you are a football player, you should seize the time to build your body and take part in training without effort. When you put on your

】and run on the football field, you will feel your body is full of energy to have a fierce competition.
