The concept of the football pools dates back to Liverpool, 1923 when the late Sir John Moores printed off and distributed football coupons by hand after football matches. Fixed-odds betting on football matches had actually been in existence since the 1880s when newspapers in England began to present fixed prices on football matches. However, the concept of a football pool was radically different to that presented by the newspaper and has stayed relatively unchanged since.

Essentially, whereas the newspaper carried odds on teams to win or a match to end in a draw, the football pools allowed players to predict the results of multiple matches, with their entry ‘stake’ being pooled together. Winners would then be given a share of the ‘pool’ depending on the amount of money in the pool and the number of winners.

The basic premise of the coupon was to amass 24 points from the list of games played on a Saturday. In order to do this, players selected matches that they thought would end in a ‘draw’ and mark their coupon with an ‘X’. The number of selections a player could make depended on the ‘perm’ (permutation) they wanted to play, as well as the cost of the bet. For example, an 8-from-10 perm allowed players to select 10 matches in the hope 8 of them would result in a draw. Players would hand their completed coupons and stakes to a collector or agent, who would send them on to the operator’s office for checking.

Once all the matches had been played, the pools operator would check each coupon and allocate a score to each selection, depending on result of the match. Commonly, draws were awarded 3 points, with away-team wins being awarded a point-and-a-half and home-team wins being awarded 1 point. Coupon scores would be calculated on the highest scoring combination, depending on the perm played and a dividend announced based on the total amount of the pool and the number of winning players – the more players who scored 24 points, the lower the winning payout was likely to be. Meanwhile, pools players would huddle around the TV or radio – coupon in hand – and await the football results being announced.

Football pools co-existed with high-street bookmakers, who provided much more specific betting opportunities on football matches and horse-racing. While the growth of the football pools had no adverse effect on bookmaker turnover, the easier access to gambling provided by bookmakers did not affect the football pools business either. In fact, many gamblers combined the two elements, contributing to the success and growth of both industries.

However, with the introduction of the National Lottery in 1994, the numbers of people who played football pools began to decline and threatened the pools operators’ long-term future. In fact, immediately prior to the launch of the National Lottery, there was an estimated 10 million football pools players but the introduction of the National Lottery has seen the loss of around 90 percent of football pools customers – lured away by the potential huge lottery jackpot. This is despite football pools still holding a potential payout in excess of £1 million!

In order to survive, football pools operators were forced to consolidate and regroup, which saw some of the major operators amalgamate into a single, larger entity. Furthermore, with the introduction of the internet and online gambling, football pools operators also cast their nets wider in an attempt to entice a greater range of customer.

Nowadays, the websites of football pools operators are about more than predicting the results of football matches. These sites now offer players the chance to play a range of worldwide lotteries as well the opportunity to play online bingo with other players around the country, or even test their knowledge across a range of quizzes as well as the possibility of an instant win ‘scratchcard’. This is all in addition to the game that made the football pools operators a household name to begin with, and was the source of much excitement on Saturday afternoons gone by!

Peyton Hillis was drafted in the seventh round (227th overall) of the 2008 draft by the Denver Broncos and was primarily going to be used as a fullback. In their careers at Arkansas Hillis, McFadden, and Jones recorded 959, 4,590, and 2,956 yards respectively. However, Hillis’ senior year was by far his best where he averaged 5.6 yards per carry (same as McFadden) and added seven total touchdowns. What is the point of all this you ask? Well, here are the arguments I am trying to make today:

The University of Arkansas had the best backfield in NCAA history in 2007

Peyton Hillis was overlooked because…of his skin color?

Before the 2010 NFL season started Peyton Hillis was traded for a third string quarterback, Brady Quinn. Chump change. Hillis currently has 726 rushing yards and eight touchdowns (all stats and projections gathered from ESPN.com) and is projected for 1,291 yards and 14 touchdowns. Felix Jones, one of the men who scouts surely looked at over Hillis in 2007, has 353 rushing yards and 0 touchdowns, and is projected for only 628 yards. Jones was drafted 205 spots ahead of Hillis in 2008. Now, McFadden is having a breakout year as well and currently has 757 yards with four touchdowns. McFadden is projected for 1,346 yards and seven touchdowns rushing. He was drafted 223 spots ahead of Hillis.

So again, how does a man who is an absolute beast not receive the attention he deserves when there are so many “experts” scouting these players?

Could it be because of the color of one’s skin?

I chalk this up to the fact that owners want to sell tickets and for this reason players like Danny Woodhead (all time leading rusher in NCAA history), Danny Amendola (released by Cowboys), Jacob Hester (led LSU to a title with 106 rushing yards in the 2007 NCAA Championship) and the aforementioned Peyton Hillis do not receive a just chance because of the color of their skin and the misconceptions this leads fans and front office people to believe.

So Peyton Hillis isn’t the fastest (was Jerome Bettis?), the most agile (was Emmit Smith?) or the best pass catcher (was Jim Brown?) in the league, so what? Many players have come before him and have had much lesser skill but have been given the chance to start because of the hype built around them. Name the last time a white running back was thought to be the starter going into the preseason? If it wasn’t for a couple of running backs getting injured ahead of Peyton Hillis he probably wouldn’t have gotten his shot.

Not only do players like Hillis help their teams win but they are also starting to become flashier due to their production in fantasy football leagues. Was Danny Amendola not good enough, or not sexy enough to play in Dallas? Was Danny Woodhead not talented enough to be the third-down back or special teams player? Is Jacob Hester really a fullback and did his talents disappear overnight? Did Peyton Hillis really not deserve to start over Montario Hardesty before the preseason? Come on man…

John Riggins, Larry Csonka, Jim Taylor and Craig James (the last white 1,000 yard rusher) would all be overlooked today and the people who say otherwise are just plain ignorant! I commend the likes of Eric Mangini (and Mike Holmgren) for not panicking when they were left with Hillis as their starter, and Bill Belichick for seeing the talents in Danny Woodhead and finding a place for him on the field, and Steve Spagnuolo for allowing the undersized Danny Amendola to be one of his go-to-guys at the receiver position.

Jerry Jones could take a lesson from these fellas in realizing that talent and ticket sales aren’t as clear as black and white. Reaching on an electric running back in college (who was/is talented) doesn’t always translate to wins and ticket sales, winning games does! And so does Peyton Hillis!

Peyton Hillis is on pace to be the first white running back to rush for over 1,000 yards since Craig James did it in 1985.

National football league betting system mainly known as NFL betting is highly popular in the United States. In this system, football match results are predicted and bets are placed on basis of the outcome.

This betting is usually done through bookmakers, online forums and websites. Some types of sports bets are:

• Proposition bets- these are made when a specific verdict of the match is predicted; like the number of goals by a particular player etc.

• Parlays- these are multiple bets which have to be one together. Even if one bet is lost the entire numbers of bets are lost.

• Head to head- in these the prediction is made for the result of the opposition and not the favored team.

• Totalizators- these are the flexible rate bets.

• Future wagers- these bets are made for a long term. Here the prediction is made before the start of the season and are not won until the end of the season. For example, the super bowl prediction in NFL season.

The NFL betting guide

If one is planning to bet in the NFL season then one needs to know about the key numbers and how that number can be turned into a disabled note. The bettors should keep in mind the phenomenon of “covering the speed”.

Theme Music And The Theme Song Of The Show

The instrumental theme music for Sunday Night Football has been composed by Academy Award winner John Williams. The broadcast also has a theme song, which was first sung by Pink, but in the 2007 season, the country singer Faith Hill replaced her. Different lyrics have been used for the song depending upon the occasion. Some of the lyrics include “Waiting All Day For Sunday Night”, and “Waiting All Year For Opening Night”. This theme song resembles the Joan Jett song “I Hate Myself For Loving You”.

Scoreboard, Logos, And Graphics

The scoreboard, logos, and graphics of Sunday Night Football have been designed by Troika Design Group. The NBC’s show uses the same bottom line scoreboard that Monday Night Football used in the 2005 NFL season.

The 2008 schedule started on April 15. The timing for Sunday Night Football is 8:30 pm, but sometimes, the show starts at 7:00 p.m. – it recently happened on September 4 for the NFL Kickoff Game between the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants and Washington Redskins.

In Europe, “football” is the term used for the game we call soccer. Oddly enough, North American football was actually devised from the game of soccer.

Professional football is conducted under the rules of the National Football League (NFL).  The game as we know it, is very different from those early days. The first soccer game ever played in America was between Princeton and Rutgers colleges. This evolved into football and in 1876, Walter Camp, known as the “Father of American Football”, wrote the rules of American football.

In the early 1900s, football players were paid only 0 to play professional football. You can’t even get a pro player to attend an autograph signing for that amount these days. The Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club were the first teams to play football, as we know it. As professional football evolved, more teams began to form. The first teams to become professional were the Pittsburgh Pirates (now known as the Steelers), the Bears, Cardinals, Giants, and Packers. The Cardinals were the very first professional football team. At that time, the Cardinals were based in Chicago. Over time, the team moved to St. Louis, then Phoenix, and finally to their current home in Arizona.

Since those early days, the professional football league has grown, and it continues to grow. Today’s professional players receive millions of dollars, plus millions more through endorsements and advertising revenues. It’s a far cry from the 0 paid to their league ancestors. People have been playing football for more than a century, and the sport has grown from a small pastime to one of the most important games in North America.

The NFL regulates professional football. The NFL currently has more than thirty teams that play, representing many of the states. The greatest degree of football hype is reached at Super Bowl time. A really good team is defined by the number of Super Bowl wins they have to their credit. Some have won the title many times, while others have never reached that degree of glory.

Professional football players are usually recruited from college teams. Coaches scout out the college teams to see which players have the potential and skill to make it as a professional football player. These athletes must be disciplined individuals who are able to focus as much as possible on the game, and avoid being distracted from their main goal. Every year, each NFL team strives to make it to the Super Bowl. Only one Super Bowl competitor will win the trophy, but both teams are considered the greatest, most competitive professional football teams.

From its humble beginnings on a soccer field, to a stadium filled with screaming NFL fans, professional football has grown to be one of the most important sports in North America.

The National Football League or the NFL is the biggest professional football league in the United States. The NFL has thirty-two teams that are based in a variety of cities across the country. Originally known as the American Professional Football Association when it was formed in 1920, the Association assumed the name “National Football League” in 1922.

At first, the most popular way people enjoyed their football was by watching their favorite college team play but the focus of the country changed in 1958. That NFL game went into overtime and captured a number of new fans who found that they enjoyed the professional football league just as much as if not more than their college football teams. Due to the rising popularity of professional football, the NFL merged with the American Football League in the 1960′s to form what is now the National Football League.

Over the years, some friendly and some not-so-friendly rivalries have come about due to a number of circumstances. These rivalries can be categorized into three separate groups. The first is the ‘intradivisional’, which is a rivalry between teams in the same NFL division. The second is interdivisional, which is a rivalry between teams in the different divisions but in the same conference. The third is the ‘interconference’, which is a rivalry between teams in different conferences. Many times fans will hear sportscasters refer to team rivalries as “divisional rivals”, “division rival” or “conference rival” instead of including the appropriate prefix.

For example, in the AFC North, there is a rivalry between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns based on the when the team’s owner, Art Modell, moved the Cleveland Browns franchise to Baltimore. Fortunately for Cleveland Browns fans, the “Dawg Pound” and its colors remained in Cleveland. The Cleveland Browns were reactivated as a NFL team in 1999. The “Dawg Pound” fans waited for their revenge and got a taste in 2001 when the Browns won against the Ravens after only four games.

Another famous rivalry began in the AFC East when the Buffalo Bills owner, Ralph Wilson, wasn’t allowed to base an AFL team in Miami and went on to establish the Buffalo Bills as a charter member of the AFL. The Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins have maintained a rivalry based on this history since 1967. This particular rivalry has had a number of key moments that continued to fuel their contention over the years including playing against each other in the ultimate game of the football season- the Super Bowl.
