Certainly the money in Spain (in terms of wages) isn’t as great as in England, but that may be secondary for many players whose first aim is to play football.

In the week leading up to the transfers, Steven Pienaar, a top player for 5th placed Everton has made noises about wanting to move to Spain sometime in the future. The Spanish league is well renowned for being a technical league, as opposed to the high octane, high tempo Premier League, and this fact may further tempt the more skilful player away from English shores.

The net effect of course, will be a lowering of standards in the English league and the dominance of the aforementioned Sky 4 will slowly wilt as the Spanish clubs fight back. In fact one Spanish club already has fought back by beating Manchester Utd in the 2009 Champions League final.

Ironically, this could save the English Premiership from really becoming stagnant as the same four clubs have finished in the top four spots for the majority of the 2000′s. It has become boring and predictable. With Utd losing their top player, and the fact they have big debts to pay may mean their manager will not get the full £80 million to spend. Liverpool, whose American owners are in serious financial trouble, may have to sell assets and become weaker, while Arsenal have never really been able to keep up financially with the others. It’s only Chelsea who still looks strong and no doubt will strengthen again.
