Wimbledon soccer club are today a club that has split. However, the history of the club saw Wimbledon make a remarkable climb up the English Football League to the top division of English soccer. En route, the Wimbledon team had some notable victories, and beat the likes of Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool, and co in league and cup games.

The club made its début in the Football League in 1977 where it began in the old Fourth Division. Here, a few seasons later Wimbledon were able to gain promotion to the Third Division. Although they could not last in their first season, after relegation they bounced back up the Third Division.

During the 1980s Basset arrived at Wimbledon, and although could not keep the club in the Third Division would soon regain promotion to the division. After this, the momentum was sustained as Wimbledon were promoted from the Second Division also. Two seasons later, by 1986 Wimbledon were promoted to the First Division.

Under Basset, the Dons were flourishing and in the top league despite being tipped for relegation would finish a very noteworthy sixth place in the league. Basset himself left the club, and was replaced by Gould. Gould would continue to establish Wimbledon in the First Division.

Then, in 1988 Wimbledon went on a great run in the FA Cup. As such, they made it to the FA Cup final for the first time in the club’s history, where they would play double chasing Liverpool. While Liverpool were the clear favorites to win the cup, Wimbledon and their goal-keeper Basset were ready to upset the script when he saved an Albridge penalty. In fact, this was the first time a goal-keeper had saved a penalty in the FA Cup final. As such, with a 1 – 0 lead Wimbledon were able to hold their lead and went on to win the FA Cup.

While the cup marked a high point in Wimbledon’s history, the club would remain in the First Division up to the beginning of the Premiership era. As the potential for a new stadium disappeared, Wimbledon began to ground share at Selhurst Park to meet the Premiership stadium requirements. In the Premiership, under Kinnear Wimbledon would finish as high as sixth in the Premiership and were able to reach the semi-finals of the cup.

However, his departure marked the beginning of a decline for Wimbledon. Under Olsen, the club’s form quickly deteriorated as they slipped into the relegation zone, and were relegated from the Premiership.

As such, they began the new decade in the First Division. In 2001 the club announced its intention to relocate to Milton Keynes. Although this did not gain widespread support from the fans, they were granted the move.

Therefore, since then the club has very much split. While Milton Keynes Dons may be considered the continuation of Wimbledon by some, the emergence of AFC Wimbledon outside the Football League is the club that most of the former Wimbledon supporters have switched allegiance to.

So today, the former Wimbledon soccer club are no longer. However, the spirit of Wimbledon soccer club remains at AFC Wimbledon, a club that has since made steady progress towards the Football League, and now playing in the Conference National are currently top of their league. As such, AFC Wimbledon could well be a Football League club again in the future.

Fall is just around the corner, and that means the return to school, shorter days, and of course, football season. Millions of Americans plan to watch their favorite high school, college, and professional football teams duke it out on fields throughout the nation. Of course, successful seasons can be attributed to not only the players but the fans as well. If you want to make sure that your community enjoys the best season possible, you should plan on using promotional products. Let’s take a look at some of the ways promotional products can make your football season a success and bring the fans closer together.

Increase Attendance: One of the best things about home field advantage is having your stands erupt into a deafening roar after a big play. But to get your stands bursting at the seams, it’s important to use a strategy that people have been using for ages–promotional products. Well designed promotional products promise football aficionados that they will have other tools available besides their voices to remain energetic during the game and pump up the team. No matter what specific product you decide to use, fans will appreciate that you are encouraging a close-knit culture within the sport of football. Everyone loves free stuff, and you can be sure that your attendance numbers will rise once you incorporate promotional products into your marketing strategy.

Promote Team Spirit: Going to a football game is about more than what happens on the field, it’s an experience that brings families, children, and friends together. When a stadium full of people are rooting for the same team, you know that you are part of a community. By giving out boom boom sticks, custom cushions, and promotional apparel, you cultivate team pride and make viewers feel as though they are part of the game. Fans will be able to easily recognize one another, and it’s sure to put people into the game day mindset.

Don’t let your football team down this season. Make sure that your stands have more spirit than the competition by using promotional products. Your team’s fan base will increase, brand awareness will spread, and people will appreciate your concentrated promotional efforts that show you care about the community.
