If you have heard the fight song “War Eagle,” then you have unmistakably witnessed an Auburn Tigers football game. Also known as the arch rival of the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Tigers have achieved enormous success in NCAA football. That includes a 1957 ranking by the Associated Press, as the top football team in the nation. While Auburn’s legacy certainly involves a winning tradition, it is only one aspect of Auburn Tigers football:

1. A history of high rankings in polls

The numbers do not lie. Various polls have ranked the Auburn Tigers as one of the greatest football squads of all time. The Associated Press has ranked Auburn as #11, in its final AP Polls. Meanwhile, the College Football Research Group has ranked Auburn #14, in its list of all-time greatest college football teams. Furthermore, the AP Poll and Coaches Poll have ranked Auburn in their final list of top 20 teams, during 33 seasons. All of these statistics are particularly impressive, considering that currently 119 schools are included in the NCAA’s Division I-A. That places Auburn in the top 10% of final AP Polls.

2. One “official” national championship

As any dedicated fan of NCAA football knows, the term “national champion” has until recently, been somewhat disputed-due to the lack of a championship game, and split polls. Officially, Auburn claims one national championship team: the 1957 squad that finished the season with a 10-0 record. However, Auburn has had several outstanding teams throughout its history, which were not officially “national champions”:

• 1914: Outscored its opponents by a whopping 193-0.

• 1983: Commendable 11-1 record and beat Michigan in the Sugar Bowl (9-7)

• 2004: 13-0 record and ranked #2 in the AP poll and Coaches Top 25 poll

3. The birth of an eagle-War Eagle, that is

Where did “War Eagle,” the fight song of the Auburn Tigers, originate? In truth, it is unclear, and several theories exist. One of the oldest ones involves the Battle of the Wilderness, which occurred in Virginia during the Civil War. The battle involved General Ulysses S. Grant of the Union, and General Robert E. Lee of the Confederates. The battle resulted in heavy causalities for both sides. Furthermore, neither side earned a strategic victory through the battle.

4. Jackson’s and Sullivan’s Heisman Trophies

Quarterback Pat Sullivan was the first Auburn player to win the Heisman Trophy Award (1971). During his college career, Sullivan passed for nearly 6,300 yards and 57 touchdowns, and even personally rushed for 18 touchdowns!

Before playing the professional sports of football and baseball, Jackson was a star football player at Auburn. In addition to playing football there, he also played baseball and ran track! Bo Jackson won the Heisman Trophy in 1985.

From Bo Jackson to the 1957 National Championship team, the Auburn Tigers epitomize NCAA football excellence. Team spirit has paralleled the team’s history of winning. Use Auburn Tigers merchandise to cheer on the team, as they leap towards a second NCAA football title.

Brent Warnken asked:

The Big 12 has provided the nation with several of the very best and most powerful college football teams this season, so it comes as no surprise that the Big 12 Championship football game will be something marvelous to behold. But which teams will you get to see when you purchase Big 12 Championship football tickets from http://www.stubhub.com/big-12-championship-football-tickets/ ? And better yet, who will win the game? Here are some of the teams with the best chances of winning the Big 12 title, and thus, the teams with the best chances of securing a BCS Bowl game bid.

1. Missouri

Wondering why Missouri is our top choice to win the Big 12? Getting to the Big 12 Title Game is the most important factor in winning the game (you can’t win it if you’re not there), so after eleven weeks of college football, the Missouri Tigers have the best chance at making it to the game, and thus, a better chance of winning the game than any other team- including undefeated Texas Tech. The Tigers are 8-2 overall with a 4-2 conference record. Their next closest opponents in the North Division of the Big 12 are the two 6-4 overall (3-3 conference) teams, Kansas and Nebraska. With only two regular season games ahead of them, Iowa State on the road and Kansas at home, Missouri would have to have a monumental breakdown not to make the Big 12 title game. Once there, they have a decent shot of upsetting the South Division winner, whoever that might be, because of their offense, which ranks 6th in the nation in overall yardage and fourth in the nation in passing yardage. While Texas Tech gets all the hype, Missouri is no spring chicken when it comes to putting points on the board. They have the fourth highest points per game average at 45.1, right behind the No. 3-ranked Red Raiders (47.9). Which brings us to…

2. Texas Tech

The Red Raiders will probably field more wagers to win the Big 12 than any other team in the division. And why not? They’re the No. 2 overall offense in the country, they beat then-No.1 and division rival Texas in a shootout a couple of weeks ago and then put up 56 points on a then-one loss team, Oklahoma State, last weekend. They look pretty unbeatable right now, so barring any unforeseen injury to either quarterback Graham Harrell or future NFL receiver Michael Crabtree, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are a very good bet to win the Big 12. The payout you will get from picking this team in a futures bet, however, is probably not as god as you’d see with Texas, Oklahoma or Missouri.

3. Oklahoma

Oklahoma plays Texas Tech this next weekend in what should be another dandy of a game. The Sooners can win the South Division title with a home game victory over the Red Raiders, landing them in the Big 12 Championship game. It all depends on the next game. If the Sooners can pull it off, they could see their name on Big 12 Championship football tickets this December.

4. Texas

Texas barely lost to Texas Tech the week before last, and with just one loss in conference play so far, they could still get the top spot in the South Division. Of course, that would mean that Texas Tech would have to blow at least one of their last games (preferably to Oklahoma), and then have both Oklahoma and Texas Tech lose their last regular season games. If you’re looking for a long shot, Texas is your team.

Austin Texas is the home of the high and mighty Texas Longhorn football team. The Longhorns are and have always been a perennial powerhouse in the sport ? one of the most elite college football teams in the nation.

Since 1998, Mack Brown currently heads the pack of Longhorns as their football coach, and home games are played at the Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin.

Championships and accomplishments

Though considered a powerhouse, the success of the Longhorns came to rise during the tutelage of Darrell Royal, who gave the Longhorns three of their National Champions (1963, 1969 and 1970) during his two decades of being head coach. Even without an integrated roster, the 1969 Longhorns squad has won national championship. Two Longhorns have won the Heisman Trophy, the highest accolade for college football players: Eric Campbell (1977) and Ricky Williams (1998).

Football was played in the University of Texas ever since 1893, and since then they were already considered a powerhouse, earning four National Champiuonships. Since 1936 and well until 2006, the Longhorns have finished the season within the top ten ranks in polls.

The success of Texas Longhorn football has been revived by Mack Brown?s signing as head coach last 1998. From 1998 until the 2006-2007 season, the Longhorns enjoyed a 93-22 win-loss record, or an 81% win percentage.

The Texas Longhorns have won a combine 29 conference champions. They have also won the Southwest Conference 25 times and appeared in the Big 12 conference with two winning stints. They appeared in 4 Big 12 Championship games. Eleven Longhorns have been named as College Football Hall of Famers. Entering 2008, the Longhorns are the third team with most victories, whether by total number of wins or by winning percentage.

Texas Longhorns Recent News

Their rank as the third in most wins and win percentage will surely rake up viewers this season. Their 45-21 victory over Baylor this November 8th just brought them recently into a tie for second place in total wins. They are currently one of only five college football teams to have obtained 800 all time wins.

During the most recent NFL Draft of 2008, the Texas Longhorn team have kept the streak alive of having one of their own players selected in for the draft. The streak has been alive since 1938 and the Longhorns have participated in all 71 consecutive drafts.

Just recently, senior Wide Receiver Quan Cosby was named as one of the 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff award, honoring the league?s and the country?s top wide receiver, as announced by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club. Cosby is on a roll with a streak of 41 straight games, number 2 for University of Texas and fourth among all active players. He has also caught three pass in 44 of his 49 career games. Throughout his career, he has caught in 186 passes for 2,277 yards and 15 touch downs. HE also happens to be the University?s top kick and punt receiver. Expect to see more of him and the powerhouse Longhorns for the shot at the title.
