How to Get Stronger and Faster for Football: Recover Methods to Get Stronger and Faster Quicker
Getting stronger and faster for football isn’t an overly complex issue…but it is hard. And, if you train hard, you better be prepared to recover harder. This is one of those long lost keys of football strength & speed training…you must recover. So, make sure you’re working hard and follow these “Steps to Super Recovery to Get Faster and Stronger for Football…
I’ve been asked to write football workouts for people maybe 1,340,831 times. How many times have I been asked about recovery?
Zero.
Yet, it’s just as important as the training end. I’ve often thought about putting together a whole recovery manual…know why I don’t? It would have 0 sales. People just don’t wanna hear about it…till they experience the results of a properly planned recovery program.
In his excellent book, “The New Toughness Training for Sports,” James Loehr writes extensively about the relationship between mental and physical toughening and recovery.
Some take home points from the book are:
√ Without Recovery, there is only stress…a living organism can only take so much stress before it shuts down…or dies
√ Recovery occurs at three levels – physical, mental, emotional. All three need to be replenished or you will not perform at peak levels.
√ You must “Balance Your Energy Checkbook” – Stress (training) is spending money, recovery is making a deposit. Spend more than you put in and you’re broke.
Remember, every time you lift weights, run, sprint, or practice you’re under stress. When you’re in class, you’re under stress (some more than others, I’m sure)…fight with your girlfriend? Stress. Parents givin you hell? Stress. Coach being extra critical lately? Stress. It all adds up quickly. So, you need to make recovery a huge part of your football training program.
Once you understand how to recover, you need to plan how to use your methods. #’S 2 – 9 are all actual recovery methods, and in #10 I’ll show you how to structure a plan.
It still makes me laugh that guys will easily drop 0+ on some BS supplement then sleep for 3hrs a night. I know, its cool to stay out till 3am and then get up early and act all F’d up. Super cool. …until it catches up with you and you find that you all the sudden suck.
It only takes one night of sleep deprivation — getting less than six hour of uninterrupted sleep — before central nervous system performance begins to decline. But how much sleep do you actually need?
The standard suggestion is seven to eight uninterrupted hours. However, if you’ve been chronically sleep deprived, you may need to spend several weeks “paying down” your sleep debt.
The “easiest” and most obvious way to do this is to simply sleep more! Add an hour at night and grab a nap as often as possible (even a 15-minute power nap helps). Eventually, you’ll be back to “normal” and you can go back to the suggested seven to eight hours per night.
]]>
Funny, I often talk about how everyone in High School used to ask what wonder supplement I was taking…what special exercise I was doing…truth is, I became a better player and set records in the weightroom because I went to sleep by 9pm, especially during the season. When it came time to put the extreme work in in the weight room, guess who was ready while others would bitch about how tired they are…
If you lack sleep, you won’t recover from your training properly. If you don’t recover, you’ll be sore, tired, and unable to perform. Not a good combo.
Here’s how to get better sleep:
• When you’re first getting used to afternoon naps, find a good meditation CD, sleep tape, or white noise machine. They’re incredibly helpful.
• Keep your bedroom as dark as possible. Cover LCD screens (on alarm clocks, the television, the DVD player, etc.), and put heavy “blackout” drapes over any windows.
• Wear a sleep mask, even after you darken the room. As someone who always had trouble falling asleep, I found wearing a sleep mask helped tremendously.
Try melatonin, ZMA, or even the classic warm milk and turkey cocktail (but not blended together). The key is to find something that works for you.
When you lift, you get sore. You get stronger, but, if you ignore flexibility, you’ll also get tight and slow.
Flexibility training (stretching) may not be exciting, but, next to sleep, it’s one of the most effective (and free!) roads to recovery.
Hip Flexors – If they’re tight, forget getting faster for football!
The best description for how flexibility effects your football speed came from Kettlebell Master Pavel…he refers to tight hip flexors (an epidemic among football players) “breaks” because of their ability to inhibit speed! Most of us need all the help we can get when it comes to getting faster for football…don’t let something as easily fixable as tight hip flexors ruin your chances of being fast!
Same goes for hamstrings, calfs, quads, glutes…and just about every other muscle. But, while we all love to talk about training the muscles of the posterior chain to get more explosive and faster…most neglect to think about the flexibility angle for those same muscles. They are responsible for football speed so you must not only train them in the weight room but take care of them in the stretching room as well.
There’s been a huge debate over stretching pre-workout. Passive stretching (holding a stretch for a set amount of time) isn’t the best idea pre-lift, but, that doesn’t mean it should NEVER be done. You can stretch post workout, on your days off, or a little throughout the day.
Take a Yoga class if you find stretching too boring on it’s own. Shoot for 20-minutes 3x’s per week in the beginning. When you’ve reached the desired level of flexibility, you can do two sessions per week to maintain.
If you take nothing else away from this article, know that increasing flexibility can increase your football speed. Simply, easy, free.
I’ll be honest here…when I first heard about Foam Rollers, I thought they were complete BS. They just screamed gimmick – the type of thing 2-bit personal trainers use on their clients to mask lack of results (like Bosu Balls, Swiss Balls…these guys are obsessed with balls).
Then, in the depths of feeling like crap, I broke down and paid the grand total of 10-bucks and got my first foam roller.
Foam Rollers – Excellent Way to Recover from Your Football Workouts
This is goin back a few years but, honestly, I thought I was done playing football and would be reduced to one of those big Powerlifters who can’t move other than to Squat or Bench. I had let my flexibility lag and i was tight and sore constantly…a condition we refer to as being “Jacked Up.”
So, I started stretching a lot and that helped but it still wasn’t getting the job completely done…so, I bit the bullet and bought a foam roller. Well, after a week of everyday rolling I felt like I reversed about 10-years of damage! Two weeks later I was back on the field and moving fluidly like the old days…it really was that dramatic.
Foam rollers literally are a long cylinder of hard foam. You place it under your muscles and roll back and forth. It’s like getting a lite massage. Now, if you’re very tight, the first few times will hurt like hell. In fact, even now it still hurts my ever-tight calfs. There are tons of guides on how to use foam rollers and most come with instrustions but, you should target:
- The Back
- Hamstrings
- Quads
- IT Bands (the side of your thigh – this will hurt at first)
- Calfs/Shins
- Triceps, Biceps, Shoulders, Pecs
- Hip Flexors (again, will be painful at first)
After a week or so of daily foam rolling, you can cut back to 2x’s per week. A full body roll should take 10 – 15 minutes. Remember, it might hurt the first few times, but, its worth the initial pain. You will not only get more flexible, but, you’ll also recover faster, enabling you to actually do more work and gain more strength and muscle.
I know it seems odd to have a section about salt baths on a site about football training, but, make no mistake, these are as useful as any supplement you can buy…and much cheaper.
This is no recent fad. My grandmother told me about the benefits of Epsom salt baths years ago, when I first picked up a weight. She didn’t know why they worked, she just knew they did. It turns out that the high magnesium content in Epsom salt baths facilitates the removal of acids through the skin. Some minerals, like magnesium, are absorbed about 65% better through the skin, so the bath is ideal.
Add about two cups to your bath water, along with a handful of sea salt. Places like Bath and Bodyworks will have about a thousand bath time/relaxation powders to choose from. You can also look for a “bath tea bag,” no joke. It looks like a giant tea bag you put in the bathtub.
As we talked about in “The Top Supplements for Football Training” article, magnesium is huge for football players. Turns out most of us are woefully deficient in magnesium (and zinc). By getting high quality magnesium into the system, you will recover faster. Plus, it’s an excellent sleep aid, helping you achieve a much deeper sleep…again, helping you recover faster.
During the off season we have to be ready to go almost every day…lifting weights, conditioning, working skills…then comes the pre-season…we not only have to keep getting stronger and f aster, but we have to prove ourselves on the football field. If you’re sore, you can’t perform at your highest level. The ability to cut down soreness, recover faster, and actually be able to use all of your new found strength and speed on the field is key to your success.
Go with 1 – 2 Epsom Salt Baths per week. Any more and they lose effectiveness. Save them for after your hardest training sessions.
That’s it for Part I. In Part II we’ll cover how to eat for maximum recovery, post-workout nutrition, De-loading and how to plan your recovery to ensure you are continually getting bigger, stronger and faster for football.

The first month of the college football season has concluded. A few early overrated teams (Virginia Tech, West Virginia, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech) have already been exposed and eliminated from the polls. Likewise, underappreciated teams left out of the pre-season polls (Nevada, Arizona, Michigan State, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Michigan and Stanford) have been belatedly included. Several high-profile inter-conference games have already helped solidify the polls by reinforcing the lofty rankings of Alabama, Ohio State, Boise State, Texas Christian, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Oregon.
With the exception of the Southeastern Conference, too few intra-conference matches have been occurred so far to distinguish the likely contenders for championships. No one in the Big East or Big Ten has played a conference game yet. No team in the Big Twelve, Pacific Ten or Western Athletic Conference has played more than one conference contest so far.
Based solely on non-conference games, West Virginia appears as the favorite to win the Big East while the Big Ten race has four teams, Michigan, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Ohio State, in serious contention for the title. This Saturday’s game between Oregon and Stanford will weigh heavily in determining the Pacific Ten championship.
Only the Southeastern Conference has played a significant number of conference matches to start to filter out the pretenders from the contenders. Nine of twelve teams in the SEC have played at least two conference games; Georgia and Mississippi State have played three already. In the Western Division, Auburn and Louisiana State have raced out ahead of the pack with two wins in their first two conference games. The two teams from the Magnolia State are already positioning themselves in the basement of the SEC West as many pundits forecasted. On the other side of the conference, Florida grabbed the early lead but South Carolina remains within striking distance. Georgia is realistically eliminated from winning the SEC East.
The Atlantic Coast Conference appears to be destined to have a conference championship game featuring two unranked divisional champions. The top two teams in the Coastal Division each have unforgiveable non-conference losses to an FCS member and to a team that lost to an FCS member respectively. In the Atlantic Division, North Carolina State is the sole undefeated team left in the ACC. If Florida State’s coaching changes can end the malaise of the past several years, the Seminoles still have a great shot at winning the ACC. Miami has the talent to contend but has not tested the waters yet in conference. It appears that the fans of the Atlantic Coast Conference have to wait once again for basketball season to restore their pride.
The question in the Big Twelve revolves around Nebraska’s and Colorado’s impending defections. Will the other four weaklings on the Northern Division manage to upset the perceived traitors? Otherwise, the task of salvaging conference pride will fall to Texas or Oklahoma to continue the Big Twelve South’s domination of the other half of the conference. One must wonder if either traditional power is up to the task. Oklahoma narrowly escaped with home wins over Air Force and Utah State. Unranked UCLA embarrassed Texas in its own stadium. The passion of the undeclared blood feud of the remaining Big Twelve teams versus the departing members may not suffice to prevent one of those two from taking the conference title on their way out of the door.
For college football fans, many questions remain to be answered. Will Alabama navigate unscathed in the SEC once again on its way to repeating as national champions? Can Ohio State remain at least second in the polls in order to have another shot at winning the BCS title and possibly end its winless post-season streak versus the SEC in the process? Will enough BCS conference members lose games to allow Boise State or Texas Christian to land in the BCS title game, assuming either will finish undefeated? Will the Big East and Atlantic Coast Conferences manage to convince the BCS overlords that their champions still deserve automatic bids for their champions? Will the Mountain West and Western Athletic Conferences continue to make their cases to receive automatic BCS bids for their champions? Many more games need to be played, all of which will provide more fodder for debates and controversies.

How to Get Faster and Increase Football Speed with Deadlifts
If you need to get faster for football, you need to build crazy strength. You can’t rely on gimmicks to increase football speed – no matter what, it’s all about hard work on basic, heavy exercises.Parachutes, weird cones, towing devices…they all look cool, but they won’t make you any faster!
Most football players, especially younger ones, have been misled by marketers of silly products like those mentioned above.
For the most part, football strength & speed training programs are a disaster. Sad, since it took a hell of a long time for the football world to catch on to weight training, especially as it applies to getting faster for football. Then, when it did, it fell into the Flex-inspired bodybuilding laden football training programs. After overcoming the “muscle-bound” theory, bodybuilding style programs made many players just that – big, bulky, and slow. Thankfully, some of the top D-I schools started to buck the trend and base their training programs around exercises that would actually help football – The Powerlifts, the Olympic Lifts, and their accessory movements.
Most strength and speed training programs for football are now have their base in big, compound movements, but some still over-rely on some, and ignore others. For example, I’ve received about a billion emails from high school players and coaches about Box Squatting. Glad to hear they’re using such a great movement; but, when asked about Deadlifting I almost always get the same reply: “We don’t do them because we don’t want to hurt our backs.” And back to the dark ages we go…
Box Squats and Box Front Squats are phenomenal football exercises! They’ll make you bigger, stronger, faster, and more explosive. But, they can be overdone. Squatting in general is overdone, but that’s a hate-mail producing article for another day.
]]>
Just about anyone who’s read even one article about strength training for football knows about the prosterior chain; all the really powerful muscles that run along the back of your body…someteims known as the muscles you see when walking away.
Box Squatting in all it’s forms is excellent for training the PC. However, as I said earlier, it can be overdone. It can also neglect the back and traps, areas we always want to strengthen for football and for looking jacked in undersized T-shirts.
So, if we need to hit all the PC muscles plus the back and traps and build insane starting speed, what’s the answer?
The Powerlifting style Deadlift is a tremendous football exercise but it’s far from the only type of deadlifting that will have you jumping higher, hitting harder, and running faster.
There are several Deadlift variations that are guaranteed to take your football training to the next level, making you faster, stronger, bigger, and more explosive.
Snatch Grip Deadlifts from a 4-inch Box
Let’s take a brutally effective exercise and make it even harder by performing it on a 4″ box (or block of wood). This exercise will absolutely terrorize the hamstrings and glutes…with a nice added bonus of hitting the upper back and traps quite nicely. One thing you’ll notice with Deadlifts and SnDLs is that the upper back and traps are usually pretty sore the day after. Anytime you have to hold a heavy bar and then do multiple reps in a pulling movement, the traps and upper back have to work hard to stabilize the load.
The 4″ box will create a greater range of motion but isn’t so high as to alter body mechanics significantly. This will really stretch and strengthen the glutes and hamstrings; the keys to football speed and explosiveness. If you find your form breaking down at 4″, try using a 3″ box.
Focus on sitting back and letting the hams and glutes do all the work. If there’s one mistake I see over and over again on this movement, it’s that when the weights start getting heavy, lifters start using their arms…that is a recipe for disaster. If you find that you are arm pulling, lower the weight a bit and build back up.
Romanian Deadlifts
RDLs are similar to a straight-leg deadlift, with the exception that instead of simply bending at the waist and pulling up on the bar, you have the hips travel backwards when bending over. This is a movement borrowed from the Olympic Lifting world, and with good reason; they are one of the most effective hamstring exercises ever invented. For many, the SLDL neglects the hamstrings while overworking the lower back. This is especially true for short-leg, long-torso lifters.
The RDL will probably do more for your hamstrings and glutes than any other exercise, with the exception of Deadlifts. It really is a very underrated movement for both football performance and for aesthetic appearance. I’ve seen guys’ football speed go through the roof after adding RDL’s to their training program. They are a true Get Faster for Football All-pro exercise!
Be sure to keep a flat back; you can use both clean and snatch grips for variation. This is a movement where you definitely want to keep the reps low. 4 X 6 is a good set-rep scheme to start with. Really push those hips back, stretch those hams out, then pop up.
This can be made more difficult by using one DB at a time.
Clean Deadlifts/Clean Pulls
A Clean-style DL (ClDL) is set up much like a Power Clean, except that you only pull the bar to waist height and shrug. You will start with the bar closer to the shins, start off the floor slowly. Then, as the bar hits mid-shin/just below knee level, start to explode the weight up. This is a great exercise for football because there are times in a game where you will need to move from slow to 100mph in a hurry. Clean Pulls/DL’s teach this skill.
I’m sometimes reluctant to recommend this lift to someone who is looking to purely raise their Deadlift for competition because, much like when doing the Olympic Lifts, your shoulders will be over the bar, rather than behind it. This can hinder form in the Powerlifting style Deadlift if you’re not careful. But, there is a way around the problem.
Sometimes, especially with athletes, especially football players who are not quite ready for Dynamic Effort work, I’ll have them perform Clean Pulls rather than Clean Deadlifts. A Clean
Pull is a much faster version of the ClDL and can be used as a speed Deadlift on Dynamic (speed) day. Because of the increased speed, less weight is on the bar and you can keep your shoulders back and not worry about missing the lift.

How to Get Faster for Football by Avoiding the 3 Biggest Speed Training Myths
The football speed training world has gone completely insane. Somehow the process of has become so complicated that only the 3 smartest people in the world can figure it out.
I’m not sure when it became acceptable to pass off the hard work that entails and replace it with fairly easy cone drills and gadgets?
Football speed is about strength. How strong you are and how explosive you become because of that strength is what leads to getting faster for football. Football speed is not track speed. Reread that…football speed is not track speed.
I’ve heard so many track coaches lament, “We work with them all off-season and their sprinting form goes to hell two weeks into the football season.” Yea, thank God. The reason is we run in a perfect straight line in perfect form in perfect conditions how many times per game? Seriously, think about that. Maybe when a running back breaks a long one or when a wide receiver gets a step on a back, but other than that, the game is played in stop and go spurts, hard cuts, plants and jumps, and with, of course, tons of hitting.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. There is an entire industry set up to separate players and coaches from their money by promising quick fixes and gimmicks and by perpetuating old myths about football speed training so that you remain weak, slow, and broke.
Time to get down and dirty and and learn how to get faster for football by killing some football speed training myths:
]]>
Note how I phrased that. Agility drills do improve your agility…in agility drills. Running through cones looks cool. It looks like a hell of a lot of work is being done, and it’s usually set up to be complicated, thus improving its effectiveness. Plus, it’s usually marketed by big companies who pay models to run through cones wearing their overpriced spandex so that it looks super high tech and gets people to fork over the loot. But just because someone looks good doing something doesn’t mean it’s really worthwhile.
Do yourself a favor. Take all the cones and bury them. After the very beginning stages, they’re only good for parallel parking practice. Sure, you can take a 14-year old player who’s never done anything athletic and see improvement by having him zigzag through cones. But, after a few months, the return on investment in the way of getting faster for football will be nil.
If you want to improve foot speed so you’re actually faster on the football field, try some clean and jerks or even the basic jump rope. It’s not sexy, but it’s effective.
This is the granddaddy of all myths. I think it was started long ago in some HIT-Jedi cave on Dagobah.
The HIT-ers, CrossFitters, and various other “strength is bad” fanatics contend that because the bar moves slowly when lifting max weights, the central nervous system will learn this and turn you into a big, slow, Gilbert Brown wanna be.
We all know that if you apply max force to the bar, even if that sucker is moving slow, the intent to move it quickly will improve both your strength and speed. You should always be applying maximum force to the bar. Your training should be centered around this concept.
Now, if you bench 200 lbs and try for 205 lbs, it isn’t going to fly up. It might even go slow. But the intent to move it quickly is what counts. It trains your nervous system (brain) to be fast even with heavy weights. It’s the same for any kind of lifting, whether it’s football related or you’re just trying to get bigger and stronger. It also has to do with muscle fiber types, but that’s a long and boring explanation.
So you always want to push/pull/squat the bar as hard as you can. Or as Mel Siff said in Supertraining:
“To , it is necessary to increase the magnitude or duration of the force applied (or both) or decrease the mass of the body. However, for practical purposes, not all of these possibilities can be achieved in human movement. The athlete is unable to decrease the mass of his body or an item of standard athletic apparatus or increase the duration of t (time) of a given movement. However, it is possible to increase the time of a movement of limited amplitude only by decreasing its speed, which is nonsense. Consequently, only one recourse remains, namely to increase strength. Maximum strength is the main factor determining speed of movement!”
I’ll keep this one short because otherwise I’ll go into a rage. You don’t need a parachute unless you’re jumping from a plane. If you want to wear “strength shoes” with the huge heel in the front, alter them. Put the heel in the back and pretend to be a stripper because that’s about the only use for a shoe with a nine-inch block on the underside of it.
All these gimmick products are good for selling but bad for speed. They have little to no value, especially when compared to good, old-fashioned, hard lifting. But tell a 15-year-old sophomore that to improve football speed he needs to do gut busting box squats, not go traipsing around with a parachute on, and you’ll see one disappointed football player!

Football can be described in two simple terms: Power and Finesse. Whatever your philosophy is in the game of football these two terms are important in determining your on field success. In fact, if your team has both elements to it, power and finesse, chances are that your success on the football field will be great. On the other hand, on field success can be good with just one of these elements. A team built on finesse such as speed and athletic ability can be successful. On the same token a team built on power such as size and strength can also have the same success on the football field.
But what if you had to choose one or the other? Which way would you go? Would your present football system enhance either power or finesse or would they struggle?
For example, what if your youth football team was not gifted with size and strength but was gifted with speed and athletic ability? Would your football systems reflect their strengths? Or, what if your football team were big, strong, tough but lacked speed and athletic ability? Again, would your football systems reflect their strengths? Consider this for a moment. We all have our favorite offence and defense that we know and love to run. For the most part, it’s probably the same football systems we learned back in high school. We know it inside and out, know how to adjust and tweak it and it’s easy for our football players to grasp. But ask yourself this question: Is my football system the right one for my football team to thrive in, or does my system put them in a position that based on what they bring to the table, they will fail?
]]>
This is a common situation for all new football coaches to consider. It’s very important that as a youth football coach we evaluate our team’s strengths and weaknesses. This can be done in spring training if you run one, or in summer training camp. The worst thing you can do as a football coach is to place them in a system that they don’t have the ability to thrive in just because it’s your personal favorite system.
It has to be the system that suits their strengths!
t’s quite possible that the football system you liked, and the playbook you developed and studied inside and out all winter including all blocking assignments, may not be the one suited for your football team. So be prepared to change or tweak that football philosophy in order to enhance your player’s strengths. One of the common questions I get a lot from a lot of people is: Are you going to run that 3-4 championship defense again this year coach? I always respond with” I’m not yet sure, I’ll know once we get into our training camp”. Usually, I get the dumbfounded look at this point. The main point is, to be prepared to change your systems from season to season and it’s truly based on what strengths and skills your players have and not on the successful football systems you had the season before!
Cheers!
