Two deals that have already shocked the footballing world were made by the same Spanish league football club, Real Madrid. On 8th June 2009, Real Madrid completed the signing of Brazilian Kaka, for a world record breaking fee of £56 million, beating their previous world record transfer of £46 million for Zinedine Zidane from Juventus back in 2001.
If that wasn’t a statement of intent, three days later, they had a bid of £80 million accepted by Manchester Utd for World and European Player of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo. The player is keen to join Real Madrid and the move is expected to be completed by the end of June 2009.
Over the past five seasons, the Sky 4 English clubs (Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal) have all dominated the European football scene. Liverpool (winners 2005, runners up 2007), Arsenal (finalists 2006), Manchester Utd (winners 2008, finalists 2009) and Chelsea (finalists 2008) show their strength in the competition.
So it really comes as a shock that Real Madrid, who last won the Champions League way back in 2002 are able to outlay these two massive record breaking fees within a week.
Their performances in their own league have been poor in comparison to their great forebears (they’ve only won their league 3 times in the past 11 years, which by their standards is very poor) and they have often struggled in the Champions League of late.
By taking the world’s greatest player in Ronaldo from their great rivals Man Utd, really puts out a statement of intent from Real Madrid. They will at least on paper, look a real force and with Kaka in their midfield, they promise to get back to the former great Galatico era of the nineties.
From a league perspective, it could have further ramifications. Players who would otherwise automatically aim to head for the English Premiership, may now be having second thoughts as they see these two great players head for Spain. Certainly the money in Spain (in terms of wages) isn’t as great as in England, but that may be secondary for many players whose first aim is to play football.
In the week leading up to the transfers, Steven Pienaar, a top player for 5th placed Everton has made noises about wanting to move to Spain sometime in the future. The Spanish league is well renowned for being a technical league, as opposed to the high octane, high tempo Premier League, and this fact may further tempt the more skilful player away from English shores.
The net effect of course, will be a lowering of standards in the English league and the dominance of the aforementioned Sky 4 will slowly wilt as the Spanish clubs fight back. In fact one Spanish club already has fought back by beating Manchester Utd in the 2009 Champions League final.
Ironically, this could save the English Premiership from really becoming stagnant as the same four clubs have finished in the top four spots for the majority of the 2000′s. It has become boring and predictable. With Utd losing their top player, and the fact they have big debts to pay may mean their manager will not get the full £80 million to spend. Liverpool, whose American owners are in serious financial trouble, may have to sell assets and become weaker, while Arsenal have never really been able to keep up financially with the others. It’s only Chelsea who still looks strong and no doubt will strengthen again.
Will the balance of power shift to Spain? Next season we will find out.

Week 8 is here and below are the recommended adds and drops for this weekend’s games:
Week 8 Adds
Jacob Tamme (TE): Tamme immediately goes from a nobody to a somebody of interest due to the gaping hole at TE that he will fill after Dallas Clark went on injured reserve. Tamme has played almost exclusively on special teams in his previous two and half years with the team but he now is the starter at TE and thus becomes an intriguing player due to the fact the Colts are one of the best passing offenses in the league. I don’t need to tell you how QB Peyton Manning turns seemingly mediocre players into starts and there is no doubt he will get Tamme involved as the TE spot is a big part of the passing attack. Give him a shot. Could be a diamond in the rough at a shallow spot.
LeGarrette Blount (RB): Blount looks like he is going to get a chance to start for the Buc’s who have gotten nothing out of the running game this season. Carnell Williams is looking like he is finished and so the rookie gets the opportunity to show what he can do. Blount put up big numbers in college and he certainly has the ability to make a difference.
Donald Brown (RB): Browns makes a sneaky good play this week at running back as Joseph Addai is likely to sit this one out with injury. The Colts go up against the Texans who we all know have one of the worst defenses in the league. Browns has good speed and cutting ability so he can easily put up a good line in this game.
Ryan Fitzpatrick (QB): All right I am sold. Fitzpatrick opened many eyes by throwing for 3 TD’s in a near flawless game against the usually stalwart Ravens defense last week. Fitzpatrick has been very productive for almost a month now and to put it in perspective, his stats are very similar to those of Patriots QB Tom Brady.
Jonathan Stewart (RB): His fellow back DeAngelo Williams is doubtful this week and so Stewart will go right into the drivers seat at running back against an up and down Rams defense. Stewart is much better than he has shown to this point and he is due for a good game. With so many byes this week, Stewart makes a great fill-in in the short term here.
Week 8 Drops:
Tony Romo (QB): By now we all know that Romo broke his left clavicle and that he wont need surgery. The latter part of the statement is the only good news in this mess as he is likely to miss around 8 weeks. That brings him back right into most leagues fantasy football title game and I don’t think anyone would have the guts to start him in such a big game off that long layoff. I know its tough to do but close your eyes and click DROP and be done with it.
Jeremy Shockey (TE): After getting off to a good start to the season, Shockey has been lost once again the last few weeks. The Saints are getting their weapons back so the chances for Shockey to get his hands on the ball will be decreasing. There are much better TE options on the free agent wire if you need it such as Tony Moeaki, Ben Watson, and Brandon Pettigrew.
Donald Driver: Driver is starting to get phased out of the offense as he failed to catch a pass for the first time since his rookie year last week. Driver has also been injured most of the year and age is certainly the cause. James Jones has eaten into his playing time and after his great game last week, it could be a permanent arrangement.
That’s all for this week. There are a ton of teams on byes this week so this is a shorter list than usual but keep on top of all the injuries in all of the games.

Its Wednesday. You know the drill. Here are the hot pickups and the disappointing drops for Week 4.
ADDS:
Peyton Hillis RB: For more on Hillis, you should be sure to read today’s Fantasy Football Player Analyzer. Any RB that can run and catch the ball is worth the attention of fantasy football owners in all leagues.
Willis McGahee RB: With Ray Rice’s status up in the air for this week, old friend Willis McGahee enters the fantasy football world of interest once again. McGahee hasn’t been worth owning for the last year plus but if he gets the start in place of Rice for this week’s game, he makes a sneaky good play in his place. We all know he has 100-yard/game ability and a nose for the end zone so make the add in case.
Kenneth Darby RB: Steven Jackson has a groin injury and didn’t practice today. Although no tear was found, the chances of Jackson going on Sunday are 50/50. Kenneth Darby scored a TD in relief last Sunday and he has the ability to be a nice one week starter.
Aaron Hernandez TE: Hernandez is coming off back-to-back 6 catch games and plays in one of the best passing offenses in the game. QB Tom Brady is getting into the habit of looking for him when he drops back to pass and he no doubt has earned the trust of him and the coaches due to his great outings the last two weeks.
Kyle Orton QB: Orton has been putting up nice numbers so far this season and no one is noticing. Yes he no longer has Brandon Marshall to throw to but Orton has made big use of Eddie Royal and the rest of the receiving corps. With bye weeks coming up, Orton make a very solid fill-in if needed.
DROPS:
Carson Palmer QB: Despite having arguably the best collection of receivers in the game, Palmer has not taken advantage as he continues to struggle throwing the ball downfield and with his accuracy. Its possible he has lost zip on his fastball due to last year’s elbow injury but either way he is not doing enough to stay in a fantasy football starting lineup.
Michael Bush RB: Bush was an interesting player going into the season due to a string of solid part-time outings when he was healthy the last few years and due to the fact Darren McFadden wasn’t able to secure the job to himself. Well that has changed in a big way as McFadden has been tremendous this season and has the starting job wrapped up for now. Bush just wont get on the field enough to make a difference.
Justin Forsett RB: Forsett is another back like Bush that had fantasy intrigue coming into the season but he has not had one impact game yet. Coach Pete Carroll has not used him as much as anticipated and the poor Seattle line does not engender confidence he will make a big impact.
Clinton Portis RB: Portis has been among the worst starting running back’s in the league so far and now he is hurt to boot. No doubt Mike Shannahan is getting tired of the poor performances and so Ryan Torain is likely to have a shot at the starter’s job. Don’t live on past glory as Portis is just a name right now.
Carnell Williams: Williams has looked like he has lost a step and is now being pushed by former 1,000 yard back Earnest Graham. With Raheem Morris looking to build an long-term offense for Josh Freeman, look for Williams’ role to decrease as the season head into the winter.
That’s all for now. Be sure to stay on top of your teams as bye weeks approach.

When the Indianapolis Colts used a first round draft choice two years ago to select Donald Brown from UCONN, it was widely assumed that the rookie would take over the incumbent Joseph Addai in short order. The fact that Addai was coming off his worst season since entering the league made his prospects look even bleaker. Faced with this challenge to his job, Addai decided to do something about it on the football field. What transpired was a very quiet but solid 2009 season where he rushed for over 800 yards but changed his game’s dynamic by catching a career high 51 passes. All together Addai hit paydirt 13 times last season which turned him into one of the great values of that campaign. Donald Brown got his touches but didn’t go enough to grab hold of the job from Addai as a rookie.
So entering 2010 Brown once again was poised to take hold of the job due to the fact Addai was entering the last season of his contract with no chance of returning. So it would make sense the thinking went for the Colts to see what they had in Brown and also to discover if he was able to take on a full load of carries all year. Once preseason began however Addai clearly outplayed Brown and thus once the 2010 season began, the former was once again the starter and once again was flourishing. Through the first two games of the season, Addai has collected 136 rushing yards while averaging 4.5 ypc along with 8 receptions for 50 yards. Meanwhile Brown has only received scant time on the field and its clear that Addai once again will be given the starters carries.
As far as Addai and his ability is concerned, he looks to be refreshed and more hungry since Brown cam aboard. Its quite possible that he got a little lax for a few years in his preparation due to the fact there were no challengers ready to take his job before Brown’s arrival which could explain the injuries and dip in production in 2008. Since than however he is showing the great cutting ability and skill in breaking tackles that he showed when he first entered the league. He also has turned himself into a top notch pass catcher and thus is a major PPR weapon. The TD’s were more than good last season and he figures to hit the end zone altogether at least 10 times once again. So all in all the prospects for Addai and continuing success is very bright and in PRP leagues he actually should be seen as a low end RB 1. Very nice comeback indeed.

The 2010 fantasy football season is just about upon us but we still have time to sneak in another preseason player analyzer so here goes:
After unprecedented success the last three season highlighted with a Super Bowl loss to the Pittsbugh Steelers, Arizona Cardinals QB Kurt Warner decided to hang up his cleats and hit the dance floor on Dancing With The Stars. Warner held the keys to the Cardinal high-flying passing attack and the job now falls to journeyman Derek Anderson. Anderson of course on his best day doesnt even approach Warner’s efficiency and excellence as a passer and so head coach Ken Whisenhunt has declared that the offense will lean heavily on the running game. Hence second-year pro Beanie Wells will have his chance to shine.
As a rookie in 2009, Wells showed the power running ability that made him a star at Ohio State by collecting 793 yards on 4.5 yards per carry for 7 TD’s. Wells was eased into the lineup from the start as he ceded carries to Tim Hightower but over the second half of the season was when he really started to blossom into a dependable every down back. So as we get ready to head into the 2010 season, the question must be asked: can Beanie Wells be a fantasy football RB 1 and what kind of numbers should we expect from him this season? Well lets figure that out.
As I said earlier, Beanie Wells is a power back all the way who does his best work charging between the tackles. The 4.5 yard average is very good and Wells can probably sustain this over the course of the year if he continues to run the way he is. So the running aspect if very positive here. Now some negatives.
For one, Wells is not a pass catcher. He caught all of 12 passes last season and thus is not attractive in a PPR format. Tim Hightower has been pass catching machine since he came into the league and I dont see why Whisenhunt would not continue to take advantage of his talents. So its entirely possible that Wells comes off the field on third downs which will suppress his yardage totals a bit. Another negative is the presence of Hightower himself as he came into camp in the best shape of his life and has shown good burst when he has had the opportunity to run the ball. Wells will definitely start out the season as the main back but Hightower can be put right into the lineup if he struggles at all.
Another big negative about Wells that could get Hightower to cut into his carries even more is the fumbling problem that he has carried into the NFL from college. Wells coughed up the ball quite a bit with Ohio State and he had 4 fumbles his rookie year. Three of those fumbles came in the first six games and he settled down after that but Wells has fumbled twice this preseason once again so dont count on this problem being solved by any means here. If Wells begins 2010 by fumbling the football habitually, you can be sure that Whisenhunt wont hesitate to make a change.
All in all, I do like Beanie Wells to have a nice season in 2010 but nothing otherworldly. He wont catch passes but he figures to be the main ball carrier which could result in nice rushing numbers and rushing TD’s. Wells’ value rises in TD heavy leagues and he stands a good chance of putting up Cedric Benson 2009 numbers which is not so bad.
2010 prediction: 1,210 rushing yards for 9 TD’s and 22 receptions

In fantasy football, participants can choose the statistics of real football players and teams so that they can play against each other in the season set up by them. The first fantasy football game was set up by Wilfred Bill Winkenbach in 1962. In this game eight teams were set up where players drafted real football players from AFL for their fantasy team. Owners of the eight teams can choose a limited number of football players from their roasters so that they can compete against each other head-to-head each week. Points were given to each player based on the scores in real AFL games and winners were awarded money that came from a pool of all the players. This is one of the basic games that are still played today, with great variations. One major difference is the use of Internet which made this game more popular and has caused it to grown into a multimillion-dollar industry. Most fantasy leagues use NFL for their season and there are also many fantasy arena football leagues.
Fantasy football is gaining popularity from last few years. You don’t have to be a football player to participate in this game. You have to just set aside a day of your week to play with your friends. If you want to play fantasy football, join a league. You can play this game in two ways, either sign up with a public league or set up your own. There are various websites on the internet that can assist you in putting up your own league for a minimum fee. This would be of great benefit if you are a beginner. You have to just invite your friends to join your league and your game is started.
After registering your team with your chosen website, you can enter a draft. Now, you can decide which players to recruit for your team. Keep in mind that you will be selecting players from real life American football players and scores will be based on their statistical performance on the field. Do some reading on sports web sites to know which football players are playing for the upcoming season and know their performance forecasts. After knowing the league’s rules, you should make a list of players who are in your team, including back-up players. You should do all this before the season starts. Try to do this quickly as some positions like running backs and quarter backs are filled up quickly as these two positions are most essential positions in the game. Also keep in mind that the names that you have chosen will play that week. If you chose unscheduled players, chances are you will not get any points from them. Do remember that you submit your weekly lineup changes before the league’s deadline. You should try to score points based on your league’s established scoring system. Your offensive and defensive players will typically be scored for their tackles, touchdowns, catches and sacks.

10. Cal Ripken Jr.
Calvin Edwin “Cal” Ripken, Jr. (born August 24, 1960), nicknamed “Iron Man” for remaining in the lineup despite numerous minor injuries and for his reliability to show up to work every day, is a former Major League Baseball shortstop and third baseman. He played his entire 21-year baseball career for the Baltimore Orioles (1981–2001). He is perhaps best known for breaking New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig’s record for consecutive games played, a record many deemed unbreakable. Ripken surpassed the 56-year-old record when he played in his 2,131st consecutive game on September 6, 1995 between the Orioles and the California Angels in front of a sold-out crowd at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
To make the feat even more memorable, Ripken hit a home run in the previous night’s game that tied Gehrig’s record and another home run in his 2,131st game, which fans later voted as Major League Baseball’s “Most Memorable Moment” in MLB history. Ripken played in an additional 502 straight games over the next three years, and his streak ended at 2,632 games when he voluntarily removed his name from the lineup for the final Orioles home game of the 1998 season. His record 2,632 straight games spanned over seventeen seasons, from May 30, 1982 to September 20, 1998. -Wikipedia.org
9. Joe Jackson
Joseph Jefferson Jackson (July 16, 1887 – December 5, 1951), nicknamed “Shoeless Joe”, was an American baseball player who played Major League Baseball in the early part of the 20th century. He is remembered for his performance on the field and for his association with the Black Sox Scandal, in which members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox participated in a conspiracy to fix the World Series. As a result of Jackson’s association with the scandal, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, Major League Baseball’s first commissioner, banned Jackson from playing after the 1920 season.
Jackson played for three different Major League teams during his 12-year career. He spent 1908–09 as a member of the Philadelphia Athletics and 1910 with the minor league New Orleans Pelicans before being traded to Cleveland at the end of the 1910 season. He remained in Cleveland through the first part of the 1915; he played the remainder of the 1915 season through 1920 with the Chicago White Sox. -Wikipedia.org
8. Derek Jeter
Derek Sanderson Jeter (born June 26, 1974) is an American professional baseball player who is currently a free agent. He is a Major League Baseball (MLB) shortstop who has played his entire career for the New York Yankees. He has served as the Yankees’ team captain since 2003. Jeter’s presence in the Yankees’ lineup, highlighted by his hitting prowess, played an instrumental role in the team’s late 1990s dynasty.
Jeter debuted in the Major Leagues in 1995, and the following year he won the Rookie of the Year Award and helped the Yankees win the 1996 World Series. Jeter was also a member of championship-winning teams in 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009. In 2000, Jeter became the only player in history to win both the All-Star Game MVP Award and the World Series MVP Award in the same year. He has been selected as an All-Star eleven times, won the Silver Slugger award four times, and he has won the Gold Glove award on five occasions.
He is regarded as a consummate professional, by teammates and opponents alike, and has a reputation as a reliable contributor in the postseason. Jeter is considered to be one of the best players of his generation. He is the all-time hits leader among shortstops and his .317 career batting average through the 2009 season ranks as the fifth-highest among active players. He has been among the American League (AL) leaders in hits and runs scored for the past ten years. He is the all-time Yankees hit leader, passing Hall of Fame member Lou Gehrig in 2009. -Wikipedia.org
7. Frank Thomas
Frank Edward Thomas, Jr. (born May 27, 1968), nicknamed “The Big Hurt”, is a former Major League Baseball designated hitter and first baseman. Thomas became one of baseball’s biggest stars in the 1990s, playing for the Chicago White Sox. Broadcaster Ken Harrelson coined the aforementioned nickname for Thomas in the 1992 season. Frank Thomas is known for his menacing home run power; he routinely swung a rusted piece of rebar (reportedly found during a renovation project in Old Comiskey Park) in the on-deck circle. Thomas played baseball and football at Auburn University. He is one of four players (the others being Mel Ott, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams) to have at least a .300 batting average, 500 home runs, 1,500 RBI, 1,000 runs and 1,500 walks in a career. He retired February 12, 2010. Thomas is one of the biggest players at 6’5″ and 275 pounds. -Wikipedia.org
6. Alex Rodriguez
Alexander Emmanuel “Alex” Rodriguez (Nicknamed A-Rod) (born July 27, 1975) is an American Major League Baseball third baseman for the New York Yankees. He previously played shortstop for the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers. Rodriguez is considered one of the best all-around baseball players of all time. He is the youngest player ever to hit 500 home runs, breaking the record Jimmie Foxx set in 1939, and the youngest to hit 600, besting Babe Ruth’s record by over a year.
Rodriguez has fourteen 100-RBI seasons in his career, more than any player in history. On September 24, 2010, Rodriguez hit two home runs, surpassing Sammy Sosa’s mark of 609 HRs, and became the all-time leader in home runs by a player of Hispanic descent. In December 2007, Rodriguez and the Yankees agreed to a 10-year, 5 million contract. This contract was the richest contract in baseball history (breaking his previous record of 2 million). -Wikipedia.org

In August 1989, three years after he retired as an active player, Rose agreed to permanent ineligibility from baseball amidst accusations that he gambled on baseball games while playing for and managing the Reds, including claims that he bet on his own team. In 2004, after years of public denial, he admitted to betting on baseball and on, but not against, the Reds. -Wikipedia.org
4. Ted Williams
Theodore Samuel Williams (August 30, 1918 – July 5, 2002), nicknamed “The Kid”, “The Splendid Splinter”, “Teddy Ballgame”, and “The Thumper” because of his hitting prowess, was an American Major League Baseball left fielder. He played 21 seasons with the Boston Red Sox, twice interrupted by military service as a Marine Corps pilot. Williams was a two-time American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) winner, led the league in batting six times, and won the Triple Crown twice. He had a career batting average of .344, with 300 home runs, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
He is the last player in Major League Baseball to bat over .400 in a single season (.406 in 1941). Williams holds the highest career batting average of anyone with 500 or more home runs. His career year was 1941, when he hit .406 with 37 HR, 120 RBI, and 135 runs scored. His .551 on base percentage set a record that stood for 61 years. An avid sport fisherman, he hosted a television show about fishing and was inducted into the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame. -Wikipedia.org
3. Ken Griffey Jr.
George Kenneth “Ken” Griffey, Jr. (born November 21, 1969), nicknamed “Junior” and “The Kid”, is a former Major League Baseball center fielder. Griffey was both one of the most prolific home run hitters and best defensive players in baseball history, fifth on the list of most career home runs, and is tied for the record of most consecutive games with a home run. Griffey, playing for the Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox, won 10 Gold Glove awards and appeared in 13 All-Star games.
Upon his retirement, AP noted: “In his prime, Ken Griffey Jr. was considered the best player in baseball.” Throughout his major league baseball career, Griffey was a popular player and a fan favorite around the league. Griffey attained widespread recognition by signing lucrative deals with companies of international prominence like Nike and Nintendo (owners of the Mariners); his popularity reflected well upon MLB which helped restore its image after the 1994 labor dispute. -Wikipedia.org
2. Babe Ruth
George Herman Ruth, Jr. (February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948), best known as “Babe” Ruth and nicknamed “the Bambino” and “the Sultan of Swat”, was an American Major League baseball player from 1914–1935. Ruth originally broke into the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox as a starting pitcher, but after he was sold to the New York Yankees in 1919, he converted to a full-time right fielder and subsequently became one of the league’s most prolific hitters. Ruth was a mainstay in the Yankees’ lineup that won seven pennants and four World Series titles during his tenure with the team. After a short stint with the Boston Braves in 1935, Ruth retired. In 1936, Ruth became one of the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Ruth has since become regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture.
He has been named the greatest baseball player in history in various surveys and rankings, and his home run hitting prowess and charismatic personality made him a larger than life figure in the “Roaring Twenties”. Off the field he was famous for his charity, but also was noted for his often reckless lifestyle. Ruth is credited with changing baseball itself. The popularity of the game exploded in the 1920s, largely due to his influence. Ruth ushered in the “live-ball era”, as his big swing led to escalating home run totals that not only excited fans, but helped baseball evolve from a low-scoring, speed-dominated game to a high-scoring power game. -Wikipedia.org
1. Hank Aaron
Henry Louis “Hank” Aaron (born February 5, 1934), nicknamed “Hammer”, “Hammerin’ Hank”, and “Bad Henry”, is a former American baseball player whose Major League Baseball (MLB) career spanned the years 1954 through 1976. Aaron is widely considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. In 1999, editors at The Sporting News ranked Hank Aaron fifth on their list of “Greatest Baseball Players”.
After playing with the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League and in the minor leagues, Aaron started his major league career in 1954. (He is the last Negro league baseball player to have played in the major leagues.)
